I have been in academic research most of my professional career. I served as Assistant Professor, later Associate Professor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham from 1972 until 1983, when I moved to the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center in the Department of Urology as Professor. My areas of research have been the molecular pathology of benign bladder disorders, particularly interstitial cystitis, and genitourinary cancers. Recent research has been directed at targeting micrometastases, which are the cancer cells that spread early but remain dormant for a time. Eventually some develop into tumors all over the body that kill the patient in the end. I was Director of Basic Research for the Department of Urology until my retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2017. In 2007 I and a colleague formed DormaTarg, Inc. to develop our ideas on how to target micrometastases. We garnered over $3 million in grant funds closed DormaTarg, Inc due to an inability to attract needed investment during the Great Recession. Following retirement I have worked with two biopharmaceutical companies. Glycologix, LLC, where I am VP for Urologic Research, is developing novel dendritic glycosaminoglycan derivatives to treat interstitial cystitis. We had successfully completed a Phase I SBIR grant and currently are negotiating with the NIH for our Phase II. I also am Chief Scientific Officer and a co-founder of VuJa De Sciences, which is developing drugs to target micrometastatic cancer cells. The Company has recently closed a Series A funding.
