The program supports businesses to ensure greater sustainability, as opposed to direct intervention and creating a supply chain bias, which is then more likely to fail when funding ceases. The program supports businesses involved in any component of the supply chain. Support is provided to businesses to improve quantity, quality and timeliness of production by providing assistance to develop in-house/embedded extension services and processes to identify / contract technical assistance, post-harvest handling and produce depot management, transport logistics, and quality assurance. The program supports major produce buyers, catering companies, landholder companies and supermarkets.The fresh produce sector is the main income source for rural women. A project objective is to empower economically women. However, a major gender focus of the component is to ensure that the current dominant position of women in the sector is not undermined. Documented evidence is that when supply chains are physically shortened and/or the number of “players” reduced, men take control. During activity design with the private sector, emphasis is placed on ensuring activities do not mitigate against the current dominant position women hold. Assistance to women will be through mobile phone services for banking and information technology (improved production and market information).An overarching support program of technical assistance, encouraging and fostering industry representation, and strategic alignment and harmonisation with four other donors is planned to achieve a broad sector impact.
