About Robert J. Sein

As the inaugural Director of the Mattone Family Institute for Real Estate Law at St. John's Law School, I oversee the Institute and its programs, including special academic programs, curriculum enhancements, student employment opportunities, and additional programming, such as seminars and conferences. I regularly design and spearhead the approval of new practice-oriented RE law courses (e.g., CRE Leasing, RE Finance, Affordable Housing and Advanced Topics in RE), recruit outstanding adjunct faculty, and assist faculty members with course ops & development. I have also designed (or played a leading role in the design of) new academic, co-curricular and extracurricular programs, including our popular Real Estate Fellowship Program for JD students and our LL.M. in RE Law (for which I serve as a founding Director). In addition, I frequently design, moderate and present at continuing legal education programs, including as part of our Mattone Institute CLE Series. As an adjunct professor, I teach courses in RE Transactions and Research and Writing on RE Law Topics. I frequently supervise student directed research papers on RE law topics and serve as faculty advisor to the N.Y. Real Property Law Journal.I advise students interested in real estate law and related fields on their career development and serve as faculty advisor to the Real Property Law Society and Environmental Law Society. I consistently interact with members of St. John's strong and diverse alumni base in the real estate industry, which efforts have resulted in fundraising to support Institute programs, many student job placements and the recruitment of an Advisory Board that now stands approx. 30 members strong.Prior to St. John's, I practiced commercial real estate law for nearly 14 years with a leading int'l law firm based in New York. My experience includes the entire range of commercial real estate subject matter, with particular focus on workouts, ground leases and international RE investment. I spent nearly a year seconded to a leading real estate finance company, where I served as in-house counsel on a portfolio of non-performing loans, reporting to the general counsel. I received my J.D. from St. John's Law in 2003, magna cum laude. While at St. John's, I was a member of the Law Review. Currently, among other organizations, I am a member of NYSBA (serve as a member of the Executive Committee and Co-Chair of the Publications Committee of the Real Property Law Section thereof).
