  • Parsons School Of Design - The New School
Professor Of Architecture And Product Design
Parsons School Of Design - The New School May 2019 - Present
My research and teaching focus on relationships between habits and habitats + mental and physical infrastructures. Courses include: Thesis Studio, Poetics of Design (seminar/studio) and the University Lecture (ULEC) "Intersections: Population Slam," and "Intersections: Fuel + Ornament." Where "Thesis" is within Product Design and "Poetics" is interdisciplinary within Parsons, the ULECs are interdivisional across The New School, including design, liberal arts and jazz students, and feature 24-hour design slams. My university service reflects a strong focus on learning infrastructures through the following roles: Dean of Parsons School of Constructed Environments (2016-21); Associate Dean, Parsons SCE (2014-16); and BFA Product Design program leadership as Interim Director (2009-10) and Thesis Coordinator (2004-09). During the university's reaccreditation by the Middle States Review, I co-chaired the Infrastructure and Resources Group (2011-13). I've been a member of the University Facilities Committee (2013-16), and coordinated faculty mentoring for the Parsons Academic Promotions and Tenure Committee (2012-14). I was elected University Faculty Senate co-chair by my peers and was the first faculty-elected representative for facilities planning during two terms in the University Faculty Senate (2005-08). Concurrently, I was a member of the Provost’s Task Force to support design consultants SOM Architects and IDEO in planning the new University Center, at 5th Ave & 14th Street. Specifically, I facilitated faculty and student participation through design charrettes, and as chair of the Academic Policies Committee in the Senate, I conceived and edited the 80-page, faculty-written Integrated Academic Policy, Space, and IT Planning Report (September 2008) as a shared faculty and administrative resource for curricular and facilities planning.

  • Studio 'Patafisico
    Director
    Studio 'Patafisico 1991 - Present
    Manhattan
Established in 1991, studio 'patafisico is an architectural design and research workshop on the westernmost coast of the Italian 'pataphysical movement, in New York City. Design investigations center on ephemeral substances, such as memory and identity, and their influences on artifacts, ornament, furniture, interiors, installations, buildings, cities and landscapes. The studio's girth expands and contracts depending on the season, the number of dining companions, and the task at hand.
  • Hawk Circle Llc
    Land Planner
    Hawk Circle Llc 2003 - 2005
From 2003-05 I conducted land planning for a conservation subdivision on 31.5 forested acres along the Brandywine Creek in Chester County, PA. On 7/2005, obtained all final planning approvals from local, state and federal agencies for nine new environmentally integrated homes, served by a low impact infrastructure. I determined site layout and schematic plans for individual dwelling units. I performed onsite water and soil erosion tests and wrote the approved sewer module, working closely with civil engineers, soil scientists, foresters, neighbors and government officials.
  • Studiolo Llc
    Founder + Creative Director
    Studiolo Llc 1999 - 2002
    Ny Ny
In the thick of my dissertation writing, I co-founded Studiolo, a furniture design company named after the subjects of my research – two exquisitely crafted trompe l’oeil memory chambers from the Italian Renaissance that were conceived to attune the mind and spirit. Studiolo furniture creates room within rooms by a subtle play of materials, surfaces, geometry and proportion, expanding psychological space. I designed a line of twenty+ pieces and directed prototyping and low volume production in New York City and a 100 mile radius. Studiolo furniture has been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, and featured in the film XX/XY, Vogue magazine, The New York Times, and House Beautiful, and elsewhere.
