Profile bio

About Robert Lawrence

I have over 30 years of experience as an electronic technician and have worked in both commercial and military environments. I have enjoyed working on various commercial projects including the design of the once popular Palm III and Palm VII personal digital assistants (PDA’s) which incorporated embedded Mobitex, GSM/GPRS, 802.11b and Bluetooth technologies. I worked on military programs including development of a state of the art ‘lock on after launch’ missiles incorporating spread spectrum communications technology. I also worked at Boeing’s High Technology Center where I collaborated closely with engineers on a LASER RADAR project. I recently worked at SAIC where I assembled and tested critical space flight hardware. I am currently employed at Quest Integrity Group where I am responsible for the Production and Maintenance Department for the NDT (Non-Destructive Test) Reformer tools.I have an extensive background in fabrication, assembly and test of complex electronic hardware and systems. My responsibilities have included component level troubleshooting, rework of state of the art printed circuit assemblies including fine pitch devices, ball grid array (BGA) and column grid arrays (CGA). I am familiar with schematic capture, printed circuit board (PCB) layout and authoring of technical documentation. I am familiar with test equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers and general lab test equipment.

Listed skills include Electronics, Testing, Rf, Embedded Systems, and 26 others.

Senior Engineering Electronictechnician

Current

Kent, Wa

Senor Electronic Engineering Technician – I am responsible for the Production and Maintenance Department for the NDT (Non-Destructive Test) Reformer tools including the proprietary Laser Optic Tube Inspection System, LOTIS, which utilizes profilometry to conduct internal steam reformer tube inspections and our MANTIS external crawler utilizing proprietary sensors and advanced cross-canceling eddy current technology.

Jun 2012 - Present

Senior Electronic Technician Vi

Kent, Wa

I have been instrumental in helping set up a new lab facility for design, assembly and test of critical space flight hardware. I worked directly with engineers performing various tasks related to this development. The tasks include assembly and test of critical space flight RF and high speed digital circuit designs, printed circuit board assembly, rework, test and verification; all in my role as the High-Reliability electronics technician lead for this division of SAIC. I am very knowledgeable of the electronics manufacturing process and was instrumental in establishing this new division’s manufacturing process ‘flow’. Duties included lab layout and design, selection and acquisition of critical test equipment and lab infrastructure (such as benches, clean hoods, tools, parts storage, etc.). I was also the manufacturing lead and tasked with the assembly of state of the art RF and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) systems for space flight including advanced receivers, MODEMs and flight DSP processors using 1100+ connection Column Grid Array (CGA) field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). I am an expert at rework methods and techniques. In addition, I am now the lead technician for a very small battery operated RF / DSP system. This devise has extremely dense packaging and requires very precise techniques during manufacturing, assembly and rework.

Jul 2005 - Jun 2012

Electronic Technician

Dotcast

I assisted a group of engineers with the development of a data casting technology to provide audio, video and data service over analog and digital broadcast TV airwaves. This technology did not adversely impact the TV broadcasts signal and was used in Disney’s Movie Beam product (now owned by Valuable Technologies LTD. I was responsible for test and rework of various sub-assemblies of the modulator design. This design combined unique RF and analog signal processing technologies as well as complex DSP based technology using re-programmable gate arrays. The assemblies were very complex using circuit substrates with as many as 18 layers and required exacting techniques for both assembly and rework.

Jan 2004 - Jul 2005

Electronic Technician

Palm Inc., Wireless Group

Palm was the leading manufacturer of hand held personal digital assistants (PDA’s). I set up an entire lab for the development of wireless PDA’s spanning many communications technologies including Mobitex, GSM/GPRS, 802.11b and Bluetooth. A typical wireless PDA contains over 400 small components requiring a microscope for assembly and rework. I have been involved in nearly all aspects of the engineering design cycle including schematic capture, printed circuit board design using Cadence Allegro, PCB fabrication specification, assembly and test of prototype and production hardware. I was instrumental in providing practical solutions for hardware and software integration, RF development testing, and system testing. I worked with development engineers to resolve problems in production test procedures used by the contract manufacturers. I supervised other technicians in delivering hundreds of prototype units during product development. I developed procedures for assembly and rework of BGA prototype boards. I built RF test fixtures and debugged production test fixtures. I modified prototypes to include new features.

Oct 1996 - Jun 2003

Electronic Technician

Boeing Defense And Space Group

I worked primarily on the 10 GHz STARS program assisting engineers on various tasks related to a phased-array communications antenna system. This system provided the first 500 MHz bandwidth, low profile communications system to in-flight aircraft enabling satellite television reception as well as full duplex passenger and aircraft data traffic management. I was tasked with the layout of a printed circuit board including RF circuitry using OrCAD PCB. I was responsible development and assembly of a fully functioning demonstration model of the phased array antenna system at a remote military location - awards received from management. I also was responsible for any lab support including fabrication, assembly and test of electronic hardware. Additionally, I worked on a fully integrated pulsed solar simulator. This task was completed on schedule and within budget. This required a true team effort from diverse organizations within the Defense and Space Group - awards from management.

Jun 1991 - Oct 1996

Electronic Technician

Boeing High Technology Center

I worked on a world record setting LASAR RADAR system enabling 0.001” accuracy every 0.001 seconds of 6 multiplexed sensors on an incoherent fiber optic cable. The system was slated for flight control systems and precision manufacturing environments. The prototype design included an elaborate electro-optical test bed positioned on a 4’ x 8’ optical prototype bench. I was responsible for procurement, fabrication and assembly of nearly all of the associated hardware.

Jun 1989 - Jun 1991

Electronic Technician

Hughes Aircraft Missle Systems Group

I fabricated and assembled numerous test and interface designs. Additional tasks included rework of digital and analog circuit assemblies, procuring components and provided general lab support. I designed a control interface unit for the TOW/WCL missile as well as wrote assembly code to test the unit. Additional tasks included assisting with testing the missile’s guidance system at White Sands Missile Test Range. I also worked on the WASP Program where I fabricated and assembled numerous test and interface designs. Additional skills included rework of wire wrap and printed circuit assemblies, procuring components and providing general lab support.
