Mittagundi is a working camp where children come for one week to get away from modern life and reconnect to real life. Kids are dropped off in the mountains near Falls Creek all watches and electronics are taken and then the kids are sent of hiking to camp overnight in the mountains before walking into Mittagundi the next day. Most kids are in for a surprise when they arrive because this is working camp, By this I mean to have a shower the boiler must be lit to have warm water, electricity stopped at Falls Creek. Firewood must be collected and chopped daily to fire the ovens. All food is grown and prepared by the kids on wood fire stoves and ovens. Vegetable gardens, cows, chickens, pigs, fruit trees are a real source of food. Life experience are learnt here. A wood working and blacksmithing area are also part of the experience. Old timers share their experiences and camp fires are a place where kids get to reconnect to each other. The entire camp was built by kids ably assisted by volunteers. All materials were sourced from the surrounding bush and a close community network has been built with neighbours and by the end of the week with the kids too.Added to day to day activities, milking the cows, collecting eggs feeding the animals and general camp maintenance, was the opportunity to go out and experience some outdoor activities like abseiling rafting skiing and camping. All the activities during the week gave the kids confidence and the opportunity to become trusting in fellow students and the community they had now become a part of. By the time the kids leave most have been dramatically converted to the simple way of life. They leave with memories they will never forget! As I Have!
