As a Watchkeeping Officer I was the Master's (Captain's) representative while working alongside a Senior Watchkeeper, and two Deck Ratings. While at sea I was responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel, collision avoidance, and responding to emergencies. My responsibilities while berthed or anchored were passenger/cargo operations, fire and security watches, mooring or anchoring, and emergency response.During any incident I had an assigned duty, which included being Fast Rescue Craft Coxswain, In Charge of the Boundary Cooling Party, Second In Charge of the Deck Fire Party, and Junior Officer On Watch. Any emergency required me to react in the best interests of the safety of the vessel, passengers, and crew.Particular to cruise ships is the need for Watchkeeping Officers to exercise good customer service. For this I have received many positive remarks from passengers, especially when holding an informative lecture on the organization and workings of the Deck Department on a ship.

Installed, maintained, and renovated stone work, trees, plants, and lawns in all weather conditions for residential, commercial, and industrial clients. Started as a labourer, then moved up to lead a team, and execute logistics across different team work sites.

I served in two portions of Canada's Army Reserve. Firstly, as a Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) Officer, in charge of administering and executing the aims of the Canadian Cadet Movement, the largest youth movement in Canada.Upon moving to Vancouver I received the Queen's Commission, and then transferred to the Primary Reserve, which augments and supports the Regular Army. As a Primary Reserve Infantry Officer I was responsible for maintaining my soldier skills throughout the year if not attending training courses, and often exercising command as part of a team. These jobs were completed using an estimate, and planning process intended for combat, but are very effective in any situation where a task needs to completed in a time sensitive environment.

I learned, and practiced the skills and knowledge required to be a seafarer in general, as well as those specific to the cruise industry in pursuit of my qualification to be a Watchkeeping Mate for ships of unlimited tonnage.
