I'm passionate about developing solutions to global problems, with a particular focus on clean water, food production, and renewable energy. My first serious introduction to these issue to came when I was an undergraduate studying Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Middlebury College. As my understanding about climate change became more clear, I felt the best use of my skills would be in developing technology to help our society reduce its dependence on fossil fuels while managing fertilizer nutrients and clean water more wisely. To that end, I have spent the last decade working on projects that address wastewater treatment, nutrient management, and renewable energy production. My first experience was working with a local dairy farm in Vermont; I designed a system that used microalgae to remove nitrogen and phosphorous from anaerobically digested manure and produce biodiesel to run farm equipment. This experience led to my Chemical Engineering graduate work in the production of oil-rich microalgae and its conversion into biodiesel through in situ transesterification. Beyond producing oil, certain microalgae make a variety of beneficial compounds that can help animals and humans lead healthier, more productive lives. At Algal Scientific, I helped develop a new fermentation platform for the production of beta glucan, a potent immunomodulator that helps improve disease resistance, stress tolerance, and productivity. This company was acquired in 2017 by Kemin Industries.The issues our society faces managing its food waste, manures, and other high strength organic wastes prompted me to start Digested Organics in June 2013. We offer a unique set of filtration technologies to purify wastewaters, concentrate nutrients, and reclaim water for beneficial reuse. We also deploy highly efficient fixed film digesters to convert organic wastes into renewable energy.
