About Robert Lipton
I am a spatial epidemiologist and have extensive experience writing foundation, community and research grants at the local, state and federal level. Over the course of my career I have obtained, on my own, or with others, over $68,000,000 in grant related funding. Recently, I helped the Indiana University Medical system obtain a $37,000,000 translational science center grant. I am also adept at grant writing and program development for non-profits often dealing with the most vulnerable and underserved in society.I have also written many medical reports, describing and analyzing trends in the literature. I have also written journalistically and am good at working to deadlines. Much of my work has been with underserved, diverse and vulnerable populations in CA, across the US and internationally. I have worked in non-profit settings, writing and obtaining funding for a variety of foundation, programmatic and research needs. Most recently I am an associate professor at the California University of Science and Medicine and a senior research scientist at the Prevention Research Center (PIRE). For much of my career, I have been extensively involved in obtaining funding from NIH, the CDC and other similar agencies to investigate alcohol and health as well as spatial research on a variety of topics, including violence, tobacco and health and health equity. I was the scientific director of emergency medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical center, on faculty at the Harvard Medical School and an associate professor in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan. I am a chronic disease and spatial epidemiologist and I am expert in dealing with large, complex data sets as well as multiple data sets simultaneously. My research has been used in the community to strengthen efforts to stem underage tobacco sales in LA as well as to help more effective violence reduction in Boston.

Further, we worked on geo-spatial issues in characterizing community health indicators across the state. I was the unit chief for the health research statistics unit (HRSU) in the office of health equity in the CA department of Health (CDPH). I was responsible for developing the state mandated demographic report on health equity for CA and in this role we dealt with a variety of data, including complexly sampled surveys such as the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). I worked directly with CHIS staff and our office helps fund the CHIS survey I was also directing development of healthy community indicators for CA as well as serving as acting principal investigator for the CDC funded California Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) program. In this role, we worked very closely with local community and county health departments in co-developing adaptation reports and local vulnerability assessments. I also worked closely with other programs within CDPH to develop a coherent and rigorous data registry for the CDPH. I also developed grant applications within CDPH and with outside partners.
