About Robert Lucius, Ph.D.

I'm a retired U.S. Marine who joined the CREW Land & Water Trust after a long and varied career in government, academia and the nonprofit sector in the United States and abroad. Since relocating to Southwest Florida, I've also taught sustainability courses at Florida Gulf Coast University. I'm a graduate of Norwich University, National University, the Naval Postgraduate School, George Washington University and Fielding Graduate University, where I received an M.A. Human and Organizational Systems and a Ph.D. in Organizational Development & Change. Along the way, I've studied Bahasa Indonesia and Vietnamese and lived in work in Hanoi, Jakarta and throughout Asia where I've made lifelong friends and colleagues. I never tire of learning new things or trying to make the world a better and kinder place for all living things.

• Provided in excess of $100k to support vegan outreach and animal welfare advocacy programs in Vietnam. • Partnered with a Vietnamese NGOs to develop and deliver humane education programs that marry participatory theory techniques with traditional Vietnamese pedagogical techniques. • Coordinated a multi-year Go Veg campaign with a domestic animal protection NGO. This campaign produced the first-ever publication (and subsequent editions) of a Vietnamese language plant-based eating transition guide, and included social media outreach, monthly veg-friendly film screenings and speakers, and vegan food tasting and culinary skills training events.• Provided micro-grants for voucher-based spay/neuter campaigns in Ho Chi Minh City, a national animal welfare “propaganda poster” contest that leveraged traditional Vietnamese art forms, and humane educations programs in Hanoi and Da Nang.• Co-organized and co-hosted the first national Animal Protection conferences in Vietnam in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and funded attendance by Vietnamese activists at animal welfare conferences in Asia and the United States.• Established and delivered the “Planting Seeds of Compassion” scholarship program, providing annual school grants since 2012 to 74 primary, secondary, and university students from low-income families in Thái Bình province, Vietnam. • Raised $30K for quality of life infrastructure improvements at leprosy hospitals and adjacent residential communities throughout northern Vietnam.
