I have truly been dedicated to the practice of veterinary emergency medicine in the SF Bay Area since 1988. It has been a major part of my identity.SAGE has been transformative for me, an otherwise "in-the-trenches" ER Vet. I am proud to be in this organization. Why? I do not believe I am copying from the Mission Statement! This is my answer to the why.As a partner in SAGE, I see all partners striving toward providing: The best way/processes/practices to provide comfort, care, and science to our patient's needs. The delivery to clients of service, care, compassion and understanding. Our employees with the best work environment, enriching their practice life with the literal and figurative tools they need. Enhancing compensation and benefit offerings instead of focusing on how it will affect profits.The vast majority of SAGE veterinarians are Boarded Specialists in their discipline. By integrating many specialty departments within SAGE, we provide in depth, advanced, 24 hour care to our patients. Having a veterinarian(s) on duty at all times, we are a place to turn for any level of care when a pet owner's primary veterinarian is not available.To be able to problem solve on ER, develop a treatment plan, and return a pet to home, in a straightforward manner, is always my objective. Injuries and illnesses do not always confine themselves to one organ system, one solution, one quick and linear path.To be able to consult with, or transfer care to, one of our SAGE specialty departments (criticalists, surgeons, internists, cardiologists, oncologists or neurologists) has transformed what I do for a living. I am kept challenged and invigorated by the 50+ veterinarians in our organization. When people ask, "What do you do?" I no longer feel the answer, "I'm an ER Vet", is correct. "I am a veterinarian in the emergency department at SAGE" is now my answer. It more aptly describes "what I do."Bob (2015)
