I was hired as the Lead Worker for Site Management Unit 2 in the Superfund Section. I acted as the Unit Chief several times with extentions. I managed several Superfund Sites across the state through all stages of the CERCLA Remedial Investigation process. This included work plans to closure and delisting. I coordinated site management with the U.S. EPA and participated in meetings negotiating with Potentially Responsible Parties, reviewing work plans, reports and other documents, assissting the Office of Attorney General, EPA Regional Counsel and the Department of Justice in Michigan and at Region 5 in Chicago. I participated in public meetings at controversial Superfund sites. I traveled across the state entering hazardous waste sites and on occasion collected samples.

I was one of the founding members of the Detroit office. Woodward/Clyde Consultants (Woodward/Clyde) was an international company based out of Denver. They got their start as a geo-engineering firm designing and constructing foundations and tunnels and then branched out to environmental work. They had a large number of PhDs and were involved in all aspects of civil engineering and all levels of environmental work. At Woodward/Clyde I worked primarily on Superfund remedial investigations and feasibility studies. I lead field teams at Superfund sites building monitoring wells, managing subcontractors, sampling all media types from sediments to air and dealing with state and federal over-site personnel. I worked with Potentially Responsible Party committees, the public and media. I wrote proposals, made presentations, wrote work plans, health and safety plans, remedial investigation reports, project reports and correspondence. I managed project budgets, scheduling and contracted with subcontractors for drilling services, heavy equipment, laboratory services, mapping services, field equipment, supplies, field offices and site setup. I worked extended periods in protection levels B (protective clothing with supplied air) and C (protective clothing with filtered air). I operated many different air-monitoring devices as well as other scientific devices used for sample analysis, geo-technical and sample collection.I was the project manager for a W. R. Grace arbitration over liability for a $100 million plus cleanup. I worked closely with attorneys, interviewing past employees, searching abandoned industrial site for documents and coordinated Woodward/Clyde experts preparing a position paper. I prepared work plans and managed field operations at the Superfund site to support our position. The arbitrator found in our favor agreeing with our assement.

I wrote proposals, made presentations, wrote work plans, health and safety plans, investigation reports, project reports and correspondence. I managed project budgets, scheduling and contracted with subcontractors for drilling services, heavy equipment, laboratory services, mapping services, field equipment, supplies, field offices and site setup. I worked extended periods in protection levels B (protective clothing with supplied air) and C (protective clothing with filtered air). I operated many different air monitoring devices as well as other scientific devices used for sample analysis, geo-technical and sample collection.At Eder I managed a field investigation at one of the Love Canal trucking company sites for the state of New York. I managed the subcontractors cleaning up the Roosevelt railroad yard in downtown Chicago for CSX. A US post Office building now occupies the property. When the junk bonds of Drexel Burnham collapsed, I was part of a four person team sent to Odessa Texas to conduct a liability audit of the 900 acre Rexene chemical facility.

I started out as a staff geologist and was promoted to assistant project manager and then project manager. I lead field teams at Superfund site building monitoring wells, managing subcontractors, sampling all media types from sediments to air and dealing with state and federal over-site personnel. I worked with Potentially Responsible Party committees, the public and media. I wrote proposals, made presentations, wrote work plans, health and safety plans, remedial investigation reports, project reports and correspondence. I managed project budgets, scheduling and contracted with subcontractors for drilling services, heavy equipment, laboratory services, mapping services, field equipment, supplies, field offices and site setup. I worked extended periods in protection levels B (protective clothing with supplied air) and C (protective clothing with filtered air). I operated many different air monitoring devices as well as other scientific devices used for sample analysis, geo-technical and sample collection. We made use of supplied air cascade systems for extended stays in hot zones. I managed Superfund sites in Michigan and Ohio where we were one of the first to use SUMMA canisters to collect ambient air samples around a hazardous waste site. I also was part of a team that mapped buried drums of hazardous waste in an active landfill in Porto Rico.

I joined the EPA Emergency Response Technical Assistance Team (TAT) under the second contract in Region V. The TAT contract was for technical support services to EPA On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) during emergency response actions. In this role I provided management, technical, and logistical support to an OSC directly, remotely and by independent assignment. Projects included investigations of hazardous waste site, addressing uncontrolled hazardous waste sites and responding to oil and chemical spills.I managed field teams while conducting site assessments, background searches and sampling various media from soils to drummed waste. I prepared work plans, health and safety plans and project reports. On site I managed cost tracking, site files, activity documentation, sample collection and submittal to laboratories. I worked extended periods in protection levels B (protective clothing with supplied air) and C (protective clothing with filtered air). I operated many different air monitoring devices as well as other scientific devices used for sample analysis, geo-technical and sample collection.I was lead TAT member at many of the hazardous waste sites during the emergency response actions. I was lead TAT during a major oil spill from a SOHIO refinery in Lima Ohio. The spill impacted 52 miles of river and cost over $2 million to cleanup. I also went with the OSC to a followup meeting with the refinery management to assess the reason for the spill and to document the the spill area and river cleanup.For the company I acted as field team leader and office manager. I over-saw the moving of the office from Bellville to Canton Michigan. I worked in five of the six Region V states.
