Project Manager Geologist
Hart Environmental Management Corp.
I was one of the founding members of the Detroit office. Hart Environmental Management Corp. (Hart) was a New York based consulting company that got its start as a government contractor working on the Love Canal project. The conducted industrial compliance audits, phase I & II audits, Superfund site management and smaller site investigations and cleanups. At Hart I worked primarily on Superfund remedial investigations. I started out as a staff geologist and was promoted to assistant project manager and then project manager. I lead field teams at Superfund site building monitoring wells, managing subcontractors, sampling all media types from sediments to air and dealing with state and federal over-site personnel. I worked with Potentially Responsible Party committees, the public and media. I wrote proposals, made presentations, wrote work plans, health and safety plans, remedial investigation reports, project reports and correspondence. I managed project budgets, scheduling and contracted with subcontractors for drilling services, heavy equipment, laboratory services, mapping services, field equipment, supplies, field offices and site setup. I worked extended periods in protection levels B (protective clothing with supplied air) and C (protective clothing with filtered air). I operated many different air monitoring devices as well as other scientific devices used for sample analysis, geo-technical and sample collection. We made use of supplied air cascade systems for extended stays in hot zones. I managed Superfund sites in Michigan and Ohio where we were one of the first to use SUMMA canisters to collect ambient air samples around a hazardous waste site. I also was part of a team that mapped buried drums of hazardous waste in an active landfill in Porto Rico.
