I made my very first Polish friends picking grapes with a crew of Polish ex-pats, in the wake of Hurricane Gloria, which made landfall on Long Island on Sept. 27, 1985. Between jobs at the time, I had already planned to take advantage of the free time by picking grapes, simply for the fun of it. Because of the hurricane, however, most of the local vineyards were forced to cut their harvest short that year, which is how I unexpectedly found myself the sole “Native American” member of Dan Kleck’s flying squadron of former Solidarność vineyard workers. And that also explains how I, along with my lovely wife, Grażyna, and our two wonderful daughters, have come to live in Krakow, for, as the poet says, “Way leads onto way.” I would not change it.
