Associate Professor Robert Mason is an internationally recognised public historian and museum studies scholar, whose research examines how museums across Asia and the Pacific engage with colonial violence. His research explores public understanding of diverse forms of historical and contemporary violence, focusing on case studies from Australia, India, the Philippines, and North America. Robert’s interdisciplinary work is published in three languages and involves collaborations with academics, curators, and human rights activists across Latin America, the Philippines, and North America. Over half of his recent publications appear in the top 5% of journals in his field, and he has held several research fellowships, most recently at the University of Indiana Bloomington. He has also led international projects, such as DFAT-funded museum exhibitions, and digital heritage initiatives with Australian local governments. A highly regarded academic leader, Robert is currently Deputy Head of School (Learning and Teaching) at Griffith University and has held senior roles including Acting Head of School and Deputy Head of School (Research). He was twice elected President of the Association of Iberian and Latin American Studies of Australasia (2020–24). Robert is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. As a mentor, Robert has supervised 19 Higher Degrees by Research to completion, with his graduates now employed in leading positions in academia, the GLAM sector, and beyond.
