About Robert Mather

Dr. Robert Mather has more than 30 years of experience in managing and implementing conservation and natural resource management projects in the Lower Mekong Region and Southeast Asia. His present main consultancy position is with Indufor as the International Protected Areas Management Adviser for the GEF/World Bank Lao Landscapes and Livelihoods Project (LLL). From August 2018 to June 2023 he was the Technical Assistant Team Lead for the EU-funded BCAMP Project implemented by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity. In 2017 he was the Chief of Party for USAID Wildlife Asia, a counter-wildlife trafficking project and before that in 2016 he was the ICEM Team Leader on a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for Mainstreaming Ecosystem-based Adaptation Project of GIZ in Quang Binh and Ha Tinh Provinces, Vietnam. Dr. Mather previously spent 8 years with IUCN, where he was the Head of IUCN’s Southeast Asia Group, and was intimately involved in technical and operational oversight of numerous projects for protected areas management, biodiversity conservation, water resources and wetlands management as well as climate change adaption. Prior to joining IUCN, Dr. Mather was the first WWF Thailand Country Representative where he designed and led many projects related to different aspects of protected areas management, species conservation and the wildlife trade before taking up a regional position leading WWF’s Living Mekong Program from Vientiane, Lao PDR. Dr. Mather has an extensive professional network and experience in the region and close working relations with a range of regional organisations. He also has significant experience in organisational development, having not only established WWF in Thailand from scratch but also having helped establish national foundations in Thailand - The Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, and the Loei Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development, as well as supporting and advising the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation in its initial period. Finally he has developed several successful examples of partnerships between conservation agencies and private sector businesses, including establishing the WWF Corporate Club in Thailand, working with Coca-Cola Thailand and Vietnam in the Living Mekong Programme , and establishing an agreement between Marriott Hotels in Thailand and IUCN. He has also worked on a number of project and programme evaluations, including an evalution of FAO's Country Programme in Myanmar, and DFAT's Water Resources Programme in the Mekong Region.
