Hunter Valley Operations

As the Senior Geologist at HVO I am responsible for daily quality control, quality and blending assessments, stockpile management, coal extraction planning, coal quality and tonnage reconciliations, long to short term planning feedback, combustibles recovery assessment, structural and quality modelling, resource exploration, drill and blast interrogation, slope stability radar deployment, geotechnical assessment and training and more. From November 2015 to May 2016 I was seconded into the Geological superintendents role at HVO.

My role as a Resource Geologist was appointed after 18 months as the Mine Geologist for technical services department for RTCA's Hunter Valley Operations. This role involves exploration planning, core/chip logging, wireline geophysical interpretation, data modelling, short term structural modelling via blast hole geophysical logs and coaling evaluations. My previous position as Mine Geologist at HVO included daily activities that consisted of dig unit horizon control, daily numbers and quality control, in pit checks for scheduling, geological review for drill and blast, geotechnical assessments and reports and project management. These roles have entitled me to work closely with all aspects of mine planning and production.

At ALS Coal Newcastle I worked extensively with coal quality analysis and reporting in both the Borecore and Superintending sample streams. During my time there I worked my way from Laboratory Technician to Laboratory Supervisor / Quality Officer / Safety Representative to Production Manager / Quality Officer to Project Officer / Quality Manager. Each role played a different yet fundamental part in the daily activities of this 24/7 operation. I was afforded great training within a knowledgeable environment which laid a solid foundation of coal as a resource as well as an understanding of the marketing that surrounds it.During my time as Supervisor and Manager I prioritised work loads and completed the rosters for over 80 employees. I was also heavily involved in the organisation of sampling at port operations such as Port Waratah Coal Services, Newcastle Infrastructure Group and Port Kembla Coal Services and participated in the development of many of the procedures that ALS used there.As the site Quality Officer I was responsible for maintaining the NATA accreditation of the laboratory. This involved the calibration schedule, audit (external/internal) schedule, equipment validation and corrective action requirements.During my time as the safety representative I participated and developed many of the risk assessments that were used on site, facilitated the back to work and injury management requirements, MSDS review and auditing system.

At Fuchs Lubricants I worked in the R&D section where new oils and flotation reagents were generated and tested. I participated in many field trials of new oils and flotation reagents.During my time at Fuchs in Newcastle I also worked extensively in the analysis of new and used oils. This involved the use of many pieces of laboratory equipment which were used to develop sample analysis reports.
