Dr. Mittra joined VRS in September 2000 and has been instrumental in the development of the clinical research center. He has served as Principal Investigator in more than 20 national clinical trials studying various aspects of retinal disease and surgery. He continues to be actively involved in the research of many of the newer therapies for Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Retinal Vascular Occlusions.Dr. Mittra has published more than 60 original scientific articles in peer reviewed publications and book chapters on retinal diseases. He reviews scientific work for journals for 5 of the major ophthalmology and retina subspecialty publications. He is an active member of the Macula, Retina and American Society of Retinal Specialists (ASRS) and the American Acadamy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He has been an invited speaker at the AAO Retina subspecialty day meeting. He served as the editor of the popular Preferences and Trends (PAT) Survey for the ASRS. He is a recipient of the Honor Award of the ASRS and the Honor Award of the AAO. Dr. Mittra has served as associate examiner for the oral examination of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a part of the process by which young ophthalmologists become board certified. Dr. Mittra has been named the AAO representative for the FDA Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drug Advisory Committee. Dr. Mittra has been active in the local ophthalmic community in Minnesota as well. He has served as the state director for the Eye Injury Registry since 2000. He was the Vice-Chairman of the Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis from 2007-2008 and the Department Chairman in 2009. He has been involving with teaching the residents at the University of Minnesota where he holds an academic appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology.He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
