Supporting the planning and implementation of development projects, mainly in education, in a number of countries. Managing the bidding process for international development contracts funded by the British government and other agencies; writing, submitting and winning bids.

Kathmandu

Managing all the activities of the British Council in Nepal. These included a significant UK Exams business, collaborative projects with the Nepalese Ministry of Education and other Nepalese partners, and a personal interest in climate change and how this is affecting the Himalayas and the people who live there. Trekking in those mountains up to an altitude of over 5,000m was an experience that I will never forget!

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Managing all the activities of the British Council in Slovenia. These covered a wide spectrum across the Arts and Sciences. I worked in close cooperation with many Slovene partners, other European cultural institutes, the EC and the British Embassy. My particular interests were in Higher Education, Science and the environment. In 2009 I conceived, designed, developed, and delivered a "Climate Camp" for young people from six European countries to help them articulate their demands for COP 15 - which were presented in Copenhagen in December that year. I also did a lot of walking in the mountains!

Advising on all aspects of British Council education and training activity in South Asia and Western Europe. During this period I visited Austria, Finland, Germany, Kazakhstan, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Uzbekistan to gain an understanding of their education systems and see how links with the UK would be mutually beneficial.

Advised BC overseas offices on all issues related to HE, met and briefed high level visitors on UK HE systems, represented the BC in HE forums in the UK and overseas, served on the Steering Committee of the Working Group on Higher Education (WGHE) of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), led evaluations of HE partnerships in Zambia and Tanzania on behalf of VLIR.

Managed £3m p.a. budget and a small UK team to create and sustain 300 HE links in more than 30 developing countries on behalf of DFID. Revised many procedures, managed the assessment of proposals, disbursed funds, provided the Secretariat for Steering Committee meetings, wrote reports, organised and undertook evaluations in the UK, India and Africa.
