Research Areas: Thermal fluid sciences, convective heat transfer, particle deposition, experimental methods, film cooling, novel film-cooling geometries, multiphase flow, wind turbine viability assessment• Performed experiments to study the effects of particulate deposition on heat transfer of first stage turbine vanes in an IGCC engine.• Procured a high-pressure particle seeder to be used in injecting coal fly ash into a high-pressure combustion rig and created a LABview interface to control the seeder during initial atmospheric tests.• Developed a method of baking, drying and sieving fly ash to match particle size distribution in literature and performed Stokes and lumped mass analyses to determine if fly ash particle behavior matched actual engine conditions and reached thermal equilibrium. • Designed two different test article geometries using Reynolds similarity to match the flow conditions of an actual engine on the pressure side of a first stage vane using the cooling hole diameter as the length scale. • Analyzed surface roughness changes due to deposition using a laser confocal microscope and then formed three dimensional surface plots.• Assisted advisor on writing proposals to secure funding in the areas of novel film-cooling schemes, aero-thermal combustion rig development at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the development of a wind turbine research facility at WVU and aircraft engine emissions modeling. • Composed two conference papers on the results of thesis work. • Co-authored a conference paper on wind power assessment as a course for undergraduate students.
