About Robert Nykodym

I am an undergraduate student at the University of California, Davis, pursuing a Major in Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Fermentation, as well as a Minor in English. My research in industry and academia has centered around the design expression, and characterization of novel proteins. My earlier research in the Siegel Lab at UC Davis focused on rapid mutagenesis of E. coli to characterize point mutations in beta-Galactosidase to help improve computer predictions of enzyme function from structure. From this research I transitioned into the biotech industry with AINovo Biotech to work on the expression and characterization of novel, AI-designed proteins for cancer diagnostics. At AINovo, my skill set grew to include knowledge of SEC and Reverse-Phase HPLC, as well as higher levels of protein characterization, such as Bio-Layer Interferometry. From my years of research, my interest in the field of protein design has allowed me to see the value of large-molecule therapeutics first hand, and I look forward to continuing my exploration of the interface between generative AI and the health sciences.

Robert Nykodym Work Experience Details
  • Theg Lab
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
Theg Lab Feb 2024 - Present
    Davis, California, United States
Computational simulations of thylakoid transmembrane protein transport with the TAT complex under the influence of electrochemical gradients, using CHARMM, GROMACS, and PyMol. Goals include creating simulations that reflect experimental stoichiometry of TAT complex members and using different softwares to visualize protein translocation within membranes. Further goals include using computational predictions to model the full conformation of the TAT complex and understand how the plasma membrane itself responds to transmembrane proteins.
  • Ainovo Biotech
    Research Assistant
Ainovo Biotech Jan 2023 - Present
    Davis, California, United States
Design and expression of novel cancer diagnostic binding proteins and antimicrobial peptides. Extensive wet lab experience in E. coli culturing and His-tag purification of recombinant proteins, as well as thorough characterization of resultant proteins and peptides. Operation and maintanence of analytical HPLC. Preparation of various buffers and broths for cell culturing and experiment facilitation.
  • University Of California, Davis
    Community Advisor
University Of California, Davis Sep 2022 - Jun 2024
    Davis, California, United States
Supervision of Residence Hall residents through university-provided, on-campus housing. My role consists not only of ensuring that residents meet university set guidelines and policies through Facilities Checks and Roommate Agreements, but ensuring that my residents receive adequate social and academic support as well. The role of Community Advisor places high emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion throughout training and the job term itself. My on-site programs and focused conversations with residents seek to address the variable life histories of students with differing identities. A key part of my role is also to ensure that my residents receive the support they need to excel in their studies through educational programs and bulletin boards, as well as through in-depth knowledge of on-campus resources available to UC Davis students, with my specific position adding emphasis on LGBTQ+ residents.
  • Siegel Lab
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
    Siegel Lab Jan 2022 - Mar 2023
    Davis, California, United States
Wet lab experience focused on enzyme mutagenesis. Comprehensive work growing beta-glucosidase mutants from oligos, testing both thermal stability and catalytic efficiency, and running SDS-PAGE gels.
