I was appointed by the Environment Agency for England to be the Conservation Member of the Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC). The RFCC will oversee more than £500m of spend on flood risk management (FRM) activities between 2015 and 2021 in the Thames region by the EA, local government and other Risk Management Authorities. As the Independent Member for Conservation, my role is to advise on making FRM activities as environmentally friendly as possible. I am currently leading the development of Natural Flood Management for the RFCC. I am also a member of the Environment Advisory Groups for the £100m Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme and the £300m River Thames flood management scheme, both of which will use naturalistic new overspill channels to manage flood waters.

I managed this project for the Thames Rivers Trust. It delivered 120 SMART targets through local partner organisations on tributaries of the River Ganges in India on time, to quality standards and to budget. It was funded by the £210,000 Theiss International Riverprize awarded to the River Thames by the International Riverfoundation in 2010.

I was Manager of the £1.7m 'UK Natural Rivers Programme'​ for WWF UK as part of an HSBC funded Global Water Programme linked with China, India, Brazil and Mexico/USA. The Natural Rivers Programme included work on policy, planning and demonstration projects across the UK. The programme was completed to time, budget and quality standards. It also levered a further £4m of spend by other parties. In 2007, I secured a further donation from HSBC of £1.7m for a new 'WWF UK Rivers and Climate Change Programme', of which I was made the Manager. However, I soon left WWF to become the Director of the Thames Rivers Trust NGO.

In this position I worked with partner organisations to produce the first strategic plan for the restoration of wetlands across the The Fens area of eastern UK. I chaired the working group with LIFE partners across the UK and France to produce the policy guidance document 'Analysing Barriers to Change for floodplain wetland restoration' (the ABC guidance). I also secured a £1m grant from English Nature for 'The Great Fen' wetland restoration project.

At the RSPB HQ I developed policy on the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive in the UK. I also worked to influence the policies of the Environment Agency, especially regarding wetland creation and the promotion of biodiversity.
