Dr. Robert Ocampo is an aerospace engineer and scientist, with a passion for spaceflight and system safety. He is also an accomplished pilot, mountaineer, hiker, SCUBA divemaster, and mountain rescuer. Prior to summiting Mt. Everest in May of 2024, he served as a Senior Systems Safety Engineer for Boeing Commercial Aircraft and the System Safety lead for Blue Origin's Human Lander System. Robert earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology and Psychology from Haverford College, his master’s degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT, and his doctorate degree in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado. He has published over a dozen journal articles related to spaceflight safety and is certified in multiple software languages and packages, including Linux, Arduino, Python, MATLAB, and Systems Tool Kit (STK).He's also spent numerous hours studying risk from the other side of the spreadsheet: • He has over 450 hours of Pilot in Command (PIC) Time as a commercial single and multi-engine pilot (land and sea), and has soloed a Piper Arrow from Philadelphia to San Francisco, round trip. In 2010, he was certified as an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic. • He has a decade of search and rescue experience, with over 250 rescues to his credit, twice breaking the record for most missions in a year with the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group. He was previously certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Emergency First Response (EFR) instructor. • Robert has also summited over 1200 peaks, including all 50 U.S. state highpoints, all 58 peaks above 14,000’ in Colorado, and several major international peaks, including Denali, Aconcagua, the Matterhorn, Mt. Blanc, the Eiger, and Mt. Vinson (Antarctica). He has also thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, ridden a bicycle from Boston to San Francisco, and stand-up paddled from New York to Maine.
