What does good look like? How do you know when you have been successful? Pretty basic and straight forward questions. My younger self would have answered these questions like many would. A) Meet budget. B) Get the promotion. C) A bigger paycheque. D) Win the award. These are not bad goals. It is often the focus for many and that is perfectly fine. For me however I have realized a shift. I had to work through many experiences, difficult experiences, in order to value something more. Do not get me wrong, I still strive to meet or even beat budget, one day I will outgrow my position and look for new challenges that a promotion would bring. Nobody is turning down money, and though collecting awards is not a goal of mine I absolutely appreciate acknowledgement for a job well done. I can say without hesitation that my “WHY”, the reason I get out of bed in the morning, is to help develop my team. I never once have to convince myself to get out of bed in the morning, never bemoan the reality that with tomorrow comes another Monday and the start of yet another work week. Working with a team on developing challenging expectations, supporting them in their pursuits, and through this, watching them develop into stronger more confident leaders than they started as, is the most rewarding and in my opinion most productive way to run any business.
