I started to work at Roush Yates Engines after a chance visit to my old Employer. Roush yates was looking for a Machinist to setup and operate a new Mori Seiki Mill Turn machine. After 6 months of unemployment I was relieved to have employment again and I would return to my roots as a setup CNC machinist. The manufacturing engineer I worked with used variables and macros to program the machine and I have to thank him at this time for teaching me how to really utilize my knowledge of this information to its full potential. After 3 years of setting up the mill turn centers and helping with different areas of the shop the opportunity to learn CAM software which is the one item I never learned through all my experiences. I am now using Gibbs Cam software to program the multi axis machines and once again trying to educate a younger generation of machinist to increase the opportunities for them and Roush Yates Manufacturing Systems. I received a call from a very good friend asking me to come to work with him at a new motorsports company that was formed to supply racing chassis and suspension parts. After much thought this would be a good challenge to help build a company. They were already established in the industry but there was a huge potential to build the machining side of the business. We continued to grow the business and increase sales through our part quality and meeting customer needs for on time delivery. Because of our reputation for quality work we received calls from local companies requesting quotes for some of their parts. We began to produce parts for other industries besides the power sports industry and were in the process of hiring new employees for other shifts and the economy once again had other plans for me. NASCAR went to the COT Car which became a kit car and leaving no room for being creative decreased our sales. Teams lost sponsorship and our young company could not survive the new economy. My next position was as Director of Operations for Southern Prestige Industries and later promoted to General Manager. I was responsible for all operations within this location. We had a Machine Shop a Perforating Business and Graphic Arts company at this location. My main focus at the time was to smooth out production problems for the machine shop and perforating business. I was responsible for all operations within this location. We had a Machine Shop a Perforating Business and Graphic Arts company at this location. My main focus at the time was to smooth out production problems for the machine shop and perforating business. We increased production by 30 percent over a 2 year period by updating equipment and focusing on production type jobs instead of the job shop type work of 50 pcs or 100 pcs and maybe never seeing that job again. The sales department focused on several of our customers that required repeat orders each month and the Owner was willing to stock parts for these customers in the form of Kan Ban system. This served our company very well since our on time delivery was improved and our quality was improved since we had the luxury of scheduling the workload on machines with greater versatility.We were approached by a large Aerospace company to supply all of the parts needed at one of their facilities since we had the best on time delivery and quality rating of their suppliers. We had to increase production from $150K in sales per month to $400K in 5 months. We achieved this goal by buying updated machinery again and increasing our quality department through put. I purchased new computers , scheduling software , updating the electrical service in the building and promoting people from within to help manage these projects. I would like to note the company would eventually get to 1 million in sales per month by year 2 of the things we implemented within the plant. The perforating side of the business had a different set of problems since we were supplying a large company with perforated vinyl that is used all over the world for advertising. While there were many changes we introduced by the end of time I was there we increased production by 35 %. Show less

My Job duties were to help the manufacturing engineers within the plant develop new processes using new tooling provided by our company. I had to keep a log of cost savings for each project and continually look for ways to increase production methods and cost savings. On one application by using new tooling the Engineer and I reduced a cycle time from 21 minutes to just over 8 minutes. This was accomplished many times throughout this plant. I gained a vast knowledge of cutting tools during this part of my career. Tooling was changing at a tremendous rate with new coatings , chip breakers, endmill and drill design during this time period of manufacturing. I learned that you can stand over people and demand work get done but when you leave the work slows to a crawl or you can treat people like human beings and earn their respect and they will produce more. It has been studied may times but if a employee feels wanted and important to the company , production is always increasing and my Job was to give them the tools needed to achieve the higher production. My Father was a School Teacher and during my time in high school I did not have a clue as to what my future Profession may be so he advised me to take a vocation at the local vocational school. This advice has served me well looking back he was a very wise man. I chose Machine shop since I loved working on mechanical things. My first job was at a small Job Shop and I was just a operator but again I applied myself to learn this trade and hopefully become a owner of a shop someday. I became the lead man and setup person for the Lathe department in 2 years and lead man in the shop in 5 years. I learned to manually program mills and lathes and grind and sharpen all types of cutting tools. We made special tools that could not be purchased at that time such as face grooving tools, form tools , etc. I spent 9 years learning my trade and all I could about the business of metal machining.
