As a Shift Supervisor, I am responsible for the supervision, manning, and operation of six police officers over a twelve-hour shift, while adjusting shifts to support a changing environment. I provide a proactive law enforcement presence on the HSTMVH campus, enforcing Federal laws and VA regulations, in a proprietary jurisdiction. Daily, I use an evolving knowledge of law enforcement practices during investigations to define the offense ensuring elements of a crime had occurred prior to citing or arresting an individual. I determined jurisdiction to classify the crime as a federal offense under CFR 38 title 21, or 18. Patrols assigned areas on foot and in a patrol vehicle. Writes Police Reports in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures after interviewing witnesses, complainants and/or suspects. My duties include responding with psychiatric intervention teams to protect persons from injury and restore order when the incident escalates beyond the management capabilities of clinical staff. In addition to the traditional law enforcement role, I routinely provide direction and customer support to patients, visitors, and staff on a wide range of circumstances. This usually includes everything from vehicle lockouts, assisting elderly or disabled patients and visitors to and from their vehicle, and ensuring patients can locate their destination so the proper medical treatment can be received. I regularly use my independent judgement and extensive law enforcement experience in deciding the best course of action based upon the circumstances of the incident without direction from my superiors.I am regularly tasked with attending Key Leadership Morning Meetings, to ensure the Director is up to date on incidents that have occurred at the facility. In addition to my normal duties, I serve as a member of the Disaster Emergency Medical Personnel System (DEMPS) team.

In 2020 I deployed as a member of DEMPS to Lake Charles Louisiana to aide with disaster relief after Hurricane Laura, completing two rotations, September 7th to October 4th. While deployed there, two additional Hurricanes hit the area. During this time, I provided security for Department of Veteran Affairs employees providing humanitarian aid to local veterans and securing the makeshift hospital and equipment. This included 12.8 million dollars’ worth of assets on the ground, 122 DEMPS staff. During this time, we assisted 688 Veterans and 158 Non-Veterans who needed assistance. This also included feeding 100 Veteran and Non-Veterans a day, a much-needed hot meal.
