Developed and disseminated publicity about program.Reestablished the ALA International Relations Office. Directed and managed ALA’s international relations program, advised and assisted officers with international issues, relationships with international organizations and programs and meetings. Provided counsel and administrative support to ALA’s International Relations Committee and its twelve subcommittees, the International Relations Round Table, and the U.S. Association Members of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

Managed international conference held in Chicago, including translation services, publicity, exhibits, registration, tours, special events and meal functions for more than 2,000 delegates from 86 countries. Reported to and worked with seven U.S. Association Members of IFLA. Conference was considered a programmatic and financial success. Attendance was 150 percent increase from the 1984 conference and a 66 percent increase from the 1983 conference.

Edited Freedom to Read Foundation News. Developed and implemented education programs on First Amendment rights and libraries. For example, with the American Booksellers Association, the Association of American Publishers and others, developed concept for an annual promotion celebrating the First Amendment, titled Banned Books Week. Created support materials — posters, resource book, bookmarks — that highlight the problems of censorship in the United States.
