For the past 30 years I have lived and breathed residential development. From land subdivisions and medium density housing through to high-rise mixed use apartment complexes, I am fortunate that my career has allowed me to work with people who create communities in these areas. But it is understanding the drivers of housing affordability and the importance of housing for all – rich or poor – that has ignited a passion to drive change. Through General Management roles with one of Australia’s largest property developers, to working directly with government ministers, policy makers, community housing providers and their support services, I have worked tenaciously to increase awareness that “housing for all” is essential economic infrastructure and underpins Australia’s prospects for stable, long term economic growth. I believe Australia needs more affordable housing and more social housing. I also believe that we need to unlock institutional investment in this sector. We need to think differently and create new and innovative funding mechanisms similar in principle to those adopted in the UK and the US.Part of the solution is to also disrupt the construction sector with new ways of building. For well over a decade, I have worked to change the way we build low-rise apartments. I led and managed the team at Australand that designed and constructed Australia's first five-storey lightweight timber residential apartment complex, The Green, in Parkville, Melbourne. The Green was designed to showcase the ability of the domestic construction sector to create more affordable housing options. It was a success, achieving construction cost savings of over 20% and reducing materials-related climate change impacts by 22% (The Fifth Estate, 4 July 2014). Constructing in timber will "disrupt" the construction sector and will provide excellent growth opportunities especially in the social and affordable housing space.Photo: The Green, supplied by Frasers Property Australia

Founding Board MemberHousing All Australians Jul 2018 - PresentMelbourne, AustraliaHousing All Australians (HAA) is an Advisory and Action Group of influential leaders from the private sector with a shared belief that it’s in Australia’s long term economic interest to house all Australians including those on low incomes. We believe the long-term cost to Australia of not providing stable housing for all will result in future generations inheriting a significant burden with disastrous economic and social consequences. Our Role:1. to harness the goodwill of the private sector to deliver short term affordable housing.2. Introduce a private sector perspective to develop strategies for the economic interest of Australia, free from political bias. 3. Via our personal relationships, influence our political system at all levels; local, state and federal by demonstrating long term economically sound options to achieve our vision. -
Property Developer, Strategic AdvisorRobert Pradolin Apr 2016 - PresentMelbourne, AustraliaMy approach to corporate and business life is to nurture and develop positive working relationships with all stakeholders. This includes all levels of government, property industry associations (HIA, PCA, MBA, UDIA), and the community. I have also contributed to organisations that help shape the future of our cities such as the Heritage Council of Victoria and Livable Housing Australia, which focuses on the disabled members of our community.I believe that leaders have an important role in shaping our society and that they have a responsibility to shine a light on the issues which they identify have long term impacts to society. I believe that, given the specific knowledge we accumulate over our professional lives, if we see a train wreck coming, we have an obligation to become vocal on policy issues that if left unchecked, could have disastrous impacts on future generations. I aim to be vocal about housing affordability and the lack of investment in social and affordable housing which has occurred under successive governments. I believe I challenge the status quo and urge like-minded individuals, organisations and businesses to create long-lasting and positive change in all aspects of society, and especially in the social/affordable housing sector. We will never find a better way of doing things if we look for the solution among the same practices that created the problem in the first place.

General Manager, Business DevelopmentFrasers Property Australia Oct 2014 - Mar 2016St Kilda Rd, MelbourneAs general manager of Frasers Property Australia, I ran a successful business by cultivating relationships with stakeholders, and pushing people to think differently so that they could recognise new business opportunities when they emerged. The national scope of this role challenged me to seek out opportunities for the residential business, focusing on mixed-use, student housing and the social and affordable housing space, while influencing the company's innovation, sustainability and product development initiatives. My approach and my values are exemplified in a piece that I wrote when leaving Frasers after 18 years: A new chapter for me is about to begin. -
