The Mauthe Center, an independent nonprofit on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, was founded by Fr. Richard Mauthe as an ecumenical center to promote interfaith understanding, spirituality, and social justice. In this new role as Program Director, I will create educational programs on these and other topics while strengthening connections between the Mauthe Center and the community, both at the university and beyond. As always, in this work I strive for human flourishing, recognizing that today is still not the tomorrow we hoped for yesterday.

I direct the Norman Miller Center for Peace, Justice & Public Understanding, which promotes the building of community through curricular and co-curricular educational programs that cultivate awareness, compassion, and commitment to justice and sustainable peace. I also teach undergraduate courses on Human Rights and Peace and Justice, preparing students to bring positive change both locally and globally; develop interfaith partnerships and community based programs that promote public understanding and collaborative service, and I network with individuals and organizations in and beyond the college community to build collaborative partnerships, secure support, and facilitate individual and collective contributions to the common good.

As part of St. Norbert College’s Division of Mission and Student Affairs, I oversee the area of Community Engagement. Our aim is to embody the Norbertine value of service to the local community while cultivating among students the understanding, experience, and passion through which they may engage their communities effectively as agents of positive change in the world. Our area consists of the Sturzl Center for Community Service and Learning, the Gap Experience program, and the Norman Miller Center for Peace, Justice & Public Understanding. I have most direct responsibility for the latter, which champions human dignity and promotes the common good through curricular and co-curricular programs that cultivate awareness, compassion, and commitment. I also teach within the Peace and Justice minor.

Led development and delivery of learning curriculum in eight east African countries.Coordinated activities of U.S. and African staff, as well as multiple teams of volunteers traveling to Africa.Personally taught learning curriculum in conflict resolution, peace-building, and basic theology.Accompanied donors and potential donors to observe programs in place throughout east Africa.Realized a 50% increase in donations as primary liaison with North American funding partners.Promoted micro-finance projects initiated by the African staff and community leaders.

Focused on spirituality, human nature, and contemporary issues in social ethics.Incorporated innovative, interactive teaching methods and encouraged diversity.Supervised internships and doctoral studies as a means of mentoring students.Honored with Faculty Award in Teaching Excellence, 1993 and 2006.Acted as department chair, 2003-2004.
