About Robert Ragan
Bob retired as a principal vice president of Bechtel, a major engineering & construction firm. Bob brings his 14 years as head of Bechtel’s Washington D.C.’s office along with his long association with animal welfare advocates and conservation issues to his role leading Monitor Caribbean and supporting the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) served as their interim Development Director in 2014. In 2012, the Bob and Pat Ragan Humane Education Fund was established at AWLA to underwrite a wide variety of animal welfare activities.In the non-profit sector, Bob spent 14 years on Board of Directors of the National Foreign Trade Council, served on its Plans & Policy Committee, and spent a year as the NFTC’s Senior Vice President (the #2 position in organization). Bob also spent seven years on Board of Trustees of Meridian International, served on its Executive Committee and chaired the Finance & Audit Committee. In addition to nearly 30 years with Bechtel, Bob spent 15 years working for the U.S. government, for the Department of Defense, NASA and the Department of Energy. Previously, he served on active duty for U.S. Navy for four years. Bob earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of San Francisco, and has traveled abroad extensively.

The Alliance provides a follow-up mechanism to track action needed and taken on important issues arising from the bi-annual meetings of the Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference. There are currently 20 shelters, sanctuaries and humane societies participating in this program from the Caribbean Region and Central America.After many years supporting shark protection activities, in August 2015, Monitor Caribbean assumed responsibility for SFMI from the Pegasus Foundation. SFMI is a reputable, well established shark protection program with a proven record of accomplishment. The Shark Friendly Marina Initiative is a voluntary program that helps conserve the world’s imperiled shark populations by working with businesses, marinas and fishermen to increase the awareness of the need to protect our sharks and oceans. There are close to 200 marinas and, 171 marine businesses participating world-wide. The Shark Friendly Marina Initiative aims to reduce shark mortality worldwide by discouraging the landing of sharks and encouraging catch-and-release of sharks in sport fishing, while rewarding forward-thinking marinas that participate in this program. Responsibilities included specialized fundraising activities including securing financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations, etc. Assisted in planning fundraising events and developing related sponsorship material. Such funds are required to support day-to-day operations as well as supported a major capital campaign to upgrade the shelters cat facility.This initially was an interim assignment until a full-time director of development was found. Now, supporting the new director of development, I will continue to provide support, as needed, on various fundraising campaigns such as the capital campaign for a new cat facility, a new "Pops for Pets" concert, a joint effort between the Arlington Philharmonic and the Animal Welfare Leagues of Arlington and other activities.In November 2012 a special fund (Bob Ragan Humane Education Fund) was established at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) dedicated to humane education regarding domestic animals as well as wildlife in the urban environment. Working with AWLA, this fund underwrites a wide variety of activities that will stimulate children and adults to recognize and promote the important role animals play in all of our lives. Show less
