As the day-to-day operation of the businesses we owned was turned over to their buyers, I increasingly devoted myself to residential real estate. Working alone and with subcontractors, I built and renovated a series of houses and apartments. I also made furniture and other products, including a novel trailer hitch step for which I hold a patent.Real estate.

After 1988, I left the textile industry and returned to Tennessee where I bought a drycleaners. While turning around that business, we developed a shopping center, founding two new businesses along the way. All of the operating companies were eventually sold. Immediately after college, I began working as a textiles salesman. Over the course of seventeen years, I rose to become a division-level general manager within several Fortune 500 companies. Between 1984-1985, three colleagues and I started a maquiladora, the conclusion of which presaged the decline of the American textile industry in the late.
