Prior to founding GreenWoodGlobal Consulting in 2011, Simpson spent nearly 18 years with the American Forest Foundation, working in its forestry-related outreach and education programs. As AFF’s Senior Vice President, Simpson was responsible for developing and implementing strategies for AFF’s forestry programs such as the American Tree Farm System (ATFS).While at AFF Simpson grew ATFS to nearly 90,000 certified properties and moved the Tree Farm program from a forest owner recognition program to a full third-party, internationally recognized, forest certification system, gaining full endorsement from PEFC in 2009.In addition to his work with the Tree Farm System, Simpson worked at AFF to develop workable forest carbon aggregating companies for small family forest ownerships. Before joining AFF in 1994, Simpson worked with Chesapeake Corporation’s mid-Atlantic forestry operations as a procurement forester and designed and directed Chesapeake’s landowner assistance program, growing it to nearly a quarter million acres in less than four years. Prior to his work with Chesapeake, Simpson worked as a district forester for Champion International in their western Montana operations.Simpson has served on multiple Boards of Directors including an eight year service on the PEFC Board of Directors. In addition, Simpson was co-founder of the International Family Forestry Alliance, an international organization serving as the voice for nearly 25 million family forest owners, communities and tribes, and served as chairman for two terms.Simpson has been a sought-after speaker in the forestry community and has addressed scores of audiences. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, Yale’s School of Forestry, United Nations Forest Forum, and keynoted the John Gray Distinguished Lecture Series at Florida State University.Simpson graduated from Virginia Tech in 1979 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resource Management.
