Dr. Robert Schainker is Senior Technical Executive at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). His experience covers energy storage, transformers, transmission, and generation technologies. He has published over one hundred papers on energy storage, cost-benefit analysis, strategic planning, electric grid security, and HV power flow controllers. He was a key contributor designing and testing the first US grid connected battery plant (10 MW – 4 hours) for SCE, the first compressed air energy storage plant (110 MW - 26 hours) for AEC, the first 600 MVA bank of HV Recovery Transformers for CenterPoint; two NaS battery plants for PG&E, and two first-of-a-kind HV power flow controls: a 320 MVA unit for AEP and a 200 MVA unit for NYPA. Schainker has given expert testimony to the US Congress, FERC, and the CEC. He was the guest editor for the IEEE Power and Energy Journal (March-April, 2006), which published a landmark set of papers on US grid security. He holds three patents (two on energy storage plants and one on simple/combined cycle plants). Also, he has written chapters in two encyclopedias on energy storage technologies. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, a MS in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Mathematics.
