For over 40 years, I have coupled my lifelong interest and curiosity in all things mechanical with my formal engineering education to investigate, reconstruct, analyze, and determine the cause for failures, accidents, and fires. I use these skills to provide consultation to clients in the legal, insurance, and industrial community who search for answers as to what went wrong - and why. I'm particularly fascinated by the process and philosophy of design, and how the pitfalls of product development can be avoided through the hard lessons learned by the examining failings in the past.The cases I have studied -- several thousand by now -- have been broad ranging and highly varied. From cranes that collapse to truck brakes that fail, from industrial accidents to fires to water leaks to injuries from sports equipment, I have developed a process for assessing the cause that relies on the fundamentals of science and engineering, along with a healthy dose of investigative experience. I also pride myself in my ability to communicate findings that are understandable to non engineers with explanations that are compelling and convincing -- through verbal presentations and written reports, or through courtroom testimony when necessary. My goal is to offer my expertise to clients, in conjunction with my colleagues at Exponent, to help solve the mysteries of accidents and failures, and I hope, to help prevent future losses.
