About Robert Scholz

My work gives me the privilege to empower people, schools, universities, churches and a variety of other groups how to make sense of and respond to some of the most difficult things that happen in our world - mass shootings, serious mental health concerns, addiction, natural disasters and now a pandemic. Whether it's a 36-year old psychotherapy client struggling with addiction or the CEO who has lost one of her most beloved employees to a shooting at a nightclub, my goal is to provide a high level of support, help people and organizations navigate challenging circumstances.As a licensed mental health professional/ consultant/ trainer, I offer evidence-informed clinical services, specialized training and consulting to Primary/ Secondary/ Higher Education institutions, mental health/ addiction treatment programs and other businesses. Working with individuals of all ages, I specialize in the areas of teens/ young adult mental health, addictive behaviors, crisis/ disaster response, sports psychology and men's issues. I spent a decade at Pepperdine University’s Counseling Center as the Assistant Director and Alcohol and Other Drug Program Coordinator, and taught in Pepperdine’s Graduate School of Psychology. My early career was spent leading forensic treatment programs in several states, a field in which I remain active as a trainer and consultant.I have provided consultation/ training services to hundreds of groups within university, community-based, medical and criminal justice settings. One of the most important aspects of my professional identity is as a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). I have authored numerous publications, including co-authoring a book with Dr. Charles Flinton called Engaging Resistance, which was a best seller in the forensic mental health field. Other topics I have written about include - men in therapy, motivational interviewing and disaster mental health.As a product of over two decades of work with leaders and training in executive coaching, I am offer coaching and leaderships training services for my clients.
