About Robert Shields, P.E.
Performance Engineer with over 8 years of experience in the power production industry. My goal here is to monitor performance, solve problem, perform tests, and, most importantly, find ways to save the rate payers money. I consider myself a strong addition to any engineering team with my inherent ability for concept and design using time management, prioritization and sense of urgency. I am proficient in Boiler and HRSG inspections, performance tuning and monitorings of coal fired and natural gas power plants, the usage of Storm Technology testing equipment, an relative trouble shooting. I work side by side with other engineers and other departments around the plant. To enhance my academic experiences, I engaged in: a cooperative education at an electrical company; was part of an international research team (material science and engineering); a member of a USF Design/Safety Engineering Project Team; and I completed an internship at a world renowned hydraulics company. I was also highly involved in both academic and extracurricular activities, such as: Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society (past President and current Advisor); American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Research Assistant; Teaching Assistant; USF Engineers without Borders; Volunteer at USF Stampede of Service; co-founder of the Tampa Longboard Society; USF Rock Climbing Club; USF Surf Club; and USF Wakeboard Club.
Listed skills include Matlab, Engineering, Labview, Simulations, and 29 others.

Performance Engineer
• Unit 5 HRSG Low Pressure Section Replacement – Reviewed ongoing issue of leaks in low pressure system by metallurgical analysis and previous inspections. Consulted with OEM contractors for new design and parameters for replacement of low pressure system. Correction will reduce turbine back pressure and will save the plant up to $489,000 per year. • Combined Cycle High Pressure Super Heater Tube Failure Analysis – Collaborated with Siemens to conduct failure analysis of high pressure super heater tubes. Inspection determined a leaking valve and a damaged spray liner. Correcting the failed valve prevented future forced outages. Early detection of the damaged liner allowed time to plan for replacement preventing additional damage.• Natural Gas Co-Fire Retuning – Tuned air balance for the 40 year old coal-fired boiler to co-fire up to 35% with natural gas. Stayed compliant with environmental regulations and kept fly ash sales within specifications. Projected savings of $250,000 per month. • Improved Heat Recovery Steam Generator Cleaning – Original cleaning method removed 500 to 3,000 lbs. of debris. Presented an improved method of cleaning to upper management with supporting data to increase debris removal by ten-fold. Improved method was able to clear more than 30,000 lbs. becoming the new plant standard.

Summer Intern
Intern position in valve and manifold product design groups as well as the manufacturing engineering group. Mentored by multiple Professional Engineers during the program. • False Readings – An assembly line inspection camera was receiving false positives. Upon inspection, it was determined that oil was splashing on the camera lens. Redesigned an assembly line splash guard using 3D modeling program (Pro-E) solved the problem.• PLC vs DAQ – A fully automated hydraulic solenoid testing station was set up to gather data with a PLC and a PC based DAQ by LabView and a pressure transducer. Multiple parameters were compared to verify the accuracy of either method would suffice.
