Experienced in underwater acoustics and antisubmarine warfare (ASW). Proven leadership in basic and applied research at the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington serving as the Director for 17 years and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as the head of the Ocean Engineering Department for 3 years. Served as Chief Scientist on many research cruises. Excellent writing skills. Author or co-author of over 100 scientific and technical papers and reports published in peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering.
