In my 30-plus years of experience in this business I have seen so many drastic changes that have taken place. I remember being the rookie in the office listening to the “old timers” saying you need to select stocks for your client. The generation of advisors under them said you need to pick the best mutual funds for your clients. Then about 15 years ago a disturbing trend started in the industry. Firms decided to stop training advisors on how to be a “stockbroker” and just trained them on being an order taker. What I mean by that is that newer brokers were told you go find clients and just put their money in one of our models. This trend also became prevalent inside 401k with the introduction of target dated funds. This is where you pick the year you want to retire, and they have a premade portfolio for you.
