I serve as “Of Counsel” at Gray Plant Mooty and am a member of the Trust, Estate & Charitable Planning practice group. I am also Everett Fraser Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School.Previously, I was the executive director and chief operating officer of the American Bar Association (ABA) (1994-2006), where I was responsible for the management of the world’s largest voluntary professional association with more than 400,000 members and a 900 person staff at the ABA’s headquarters in Chicago and its Washington, DC, office.Prior to assuming my position at the ABA, I was Dean of the University of Minnesota Law School from 1979 to 1994. From 1977-1980, I served as the University of Minnesota vice president for administration and planning. I was the University’s representative to the NCAA, the Big Ten, and the WCHA from 1981-1993, and subsequently I have served on the NCAA’s Division I Infractions Appeals Committee. My current courses at the University of Minnesota Law School are Estate Planning, Great Cases that Shaped the Nation, and Rule of Law (a course on the remarkable work American lawyers have done to bring the rule of law to struggling new democracies throughout the world).I am a Commissioner on Uniform Laws from Minnesota and served as National President of the Uniform Law Commission from 2009 to 2011. I am a member of the American Law Institute, as well as a member of the Council and advisor to several Restatements of the ALI. I served as National President of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association in 2004-05.I currently serve on the board of directors of Great Northern Iron Ore Properties, a New York Stock Exchange Company (since 1982), and am Chairman of the Board of Directors of Educational Credit Management Company.Areas of Concentration:Estate Planning, Wills, TrustsComplex Investigations
