I conducted fieldwork, desktop assessments and reporting. Responsibilities included:• planning and managing of ecological studies;• conducting river health assessments, with the use of fish shocking, macroinvertebrate studies, riparian vegetation, diatoms and water chemistry;• ongoing monitoring of development sites, mines and diesel spills;• mapping with the use of QGIS and the design and management of GroundTruth’s geoODK databases;• ecological education for school groups with a focus of freshwater conservation.

I conducted studies for various environmental companies, for which I planned the logistics, conducted the fieldwork, analysed the data, designed the GIS, and reported the findings. Studies included:• wetland delineations and functional assessments for 22 projects including power stations, mining mega-pits, farms, a railway line and a business park in the Northern Cape, Mpumulanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Free State and the North West;• vegetation assessments for 3 projects in Mpumulanga and KwaZulu-Natal;• veld condition assessment in the Free State;• assisted with vegetation transects and illustration for a Water Research Commission Project in KwaZulu-Natal;• assisted with a soil and land capability assessment in the North West.

Responsibilities included:• collection and photography of alien plants and collating plant descriptions for the Kruger National Park alien plant database (a collaborative project with the Centre for International Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development (CIRAD), and South African National Parks (SANParks));• supervision of junior technician and field assistants;• monitoring of vegetation in several long-term monitoring plots inside and outside KNP and Mapungubwe;• designing and managing SAEON ArcGIS and CyberTracker databases;• maintenance of the network of SAEON weather stations and camera traps;• assisting with community outreach mentoring at environmental education camps;• assisting with annual water bird census of the Olifants river and tributaries;• assisting and guarding visiting researchers in the field.
