I have over 10 years’ experience in the Legal Industry having previously worked in the Claimant Personal Injury (‘PI’) world. I qualified as a chartered legal executive in August 2021.I worked solely on Court of Protection and Lasting Power of Attorney ('LPA') Matters. I gained and extended my experience in dealing with applications for the appointment of a Deputy and also to deal with more complex Deputyship matters such as Contested Deputyship Applications, Statutory Will Applications and an array of other applications that were required to be made to the Court of Protection during a Deputyship. I also managed my own case load of Deputyship's for Property and Financial Affairs on behalf of the appointed Deputy.I also dealt with the preparation and execution of LPA's for Property and Financial Affairs and also managing the property and financial affairs for an individual under an LPA.
Deputyship Paralegal
I joined JMD Law Solicitors in April 2018 as part of the Court of Protection team as a Deputyship Paralegal. During the time in this role I grew to have a good understanding of the Court of Protection Rules and worked both on Applications for Deputy’s to be appointed and also had a case load of active deputyship files which I ran on behalf of the named Deputy. These clients lack capacity to manage their property and financial affairs for a number of different reasons.I dealt with Court of Protection cases from the point of referral, through the application process and then management of the case once a Deputy had been appointed.
Team Manager
As a team manager I was responsible for 6 Claimant MOJ Case Managers with case loads varying between 130 - 150 claims. I was required to provide technical knowledge and guidance for mixed case loads of Public Liability and Employers Liability personal injury claims valued between £1,000 and £25,000. The main duties of the role included:Monitoring and reporting on performance and targets amalgamating daily, weekly and monthly stats, to show weather monthly targets are hit and enable staff to know where they are at in the month. Providing prompt and accurate information on individual performance.Using Microsoft excel spreadsheets to analyse data to identify the claims that are going to settle. Using this data to provide monthly predictions as to how much financial income the team is going to generate on a monthly basis.Carrying out duties such as monthly reviews of staff performance providing reports to the Head of Department on all members of staff performance. Also reviewing staff members when acquired to provide guidance to member of staff at the 1 month and 3 month stage. Then deciding whether to pass new members of staff from their probationary period after 6 months.Preparing and presenting training sessions to provide legal updates and changes in systems and processes to all team members. Preparing Power Point presentations and notes to give to each member of the team.Using and manipulating Management Information provided in the form of excel spreadsheets. Claims are separate in to 11 stages and this information can be used to breakdown and analyse how claims are at each stage enabling me to dip in to the teams cases and highlight any issues and also identify where income can be generated within case loads each month.Experienced user of Microsoft Office using the system on a day-to-day basis drafting correspondence to client.
Case Manager
This role requires me to carry out the following tasks:To run a caseload of pre-litigated employers’ and public liability personal injury matters. Claims that have exited the MOJ Portal for a variety of reasons were passed over to me to run effectively through to settlement,to draft Pre-Action Disclosure Applications when appropriate,To ensure files are kept up to date, accurate and maintained in accordance with the firm’s file maintenance policy,to achieve the set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in terms of income generation, settlements, Part 36 offers made and litigation rates,To provide advice and negotiate settlement to meet the commercial interests of the clients. Interviewing clients and witnesses and drafting complex statements and also updating clients as to the progress of their claims,Obtaining and reviewing medical evidence including medical records to assist with cases and updating databases accordingly. Also reviewing medical evidence to provide advice on quantum to the claimant,Obtaining and reviewing extensive disclosure documentation and noting any issues with the same to enable the claim to come to a successful conclusion,instructing counsel and issuing court proceedings,Case management system experience including issuing letters before action, County Court Proceedings, entering Judgments, responding to Application’s to set aside Judgment, conducting various enforcement actions via obtaining Charging Orders, Attachment of Earnings Orders and also drafting schedule of losses.
Case Assistant (Paralegal)
This role required me to take claims on from the initial proceedings taking full details from the claimant sorting out the CFA and Terms of Business with the claimant. I was also required to ascertain an ATE policy for the claim. Depending on the nature of the claim I would then either draft a claimant notification form and submit the claim through the Ministry of Justice Claims portal or draft a Letter of Claim to be served on the defendants. Due to the nature of hearing loss claims I was also required to Issue proceedings for the claim in court protectively as a lot of the claimants would be nearing their limitation date. The role required a lot of client contact and I took pride in adhering to the 28 client contact policy. I was required to use SolCase (case management system) effectively and managed my case load around my scheduled entries within SolCase.I have also become apt at using the BIRT system creating spreadsheets of my case load and stages enabling me to manipulate the data to manage my case load as effectively as possible. Due to the nature of the claims there was a variety of technical and complex issues encountered. The hearing loss claims required an understanding of the CLB hearing loss guidelines and complex calculations needed to be carried out to calculate the information provided by medical experts. I was also capable of reviewing and quantifying the medical reports to provide clients with advice on reasonable settlements. I settled claims within the MOJ claims portal and have experiencing drafting and posting stage 2 settlement packs and negotiating with defendants within the portal. I also gained experience settling claims outside of the portal drafting part 36 offers and also recovering hourly rate costs on the files that were run outside of the portal. This role helped to build all of my skills and has enabled me to become an effective manager of a varied case load of complex personal injury claims.
