Gay Tas HistoryGay Tas History Dec 2017 - PresentHobart, Tasmania, AustraliaMy objective is to accumulate an oral history of gay life in Tasmania, beginning with the mid-20th century while the participants are alive and willing. I have a number of reliable elderly residents who say they are willing to participate in recorded interviews, some openly, some anonymously. These memories are valuable for the LGBTI history of Tasmania. The interviews will be digitally recorded on archive-quality equipment designed for the purpose and used extensively in other oral history work. Written recollections and any other relevant material are also accepted for the project. The first interviews will hopefully describe the ‘scene’ in Tasmania in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s, which are the main gaps in state and national archives. Thus, I need to interview elders born before 1960; many now residing outside Tasmania!Copies of recordings will be lodged with interested archives and the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives (ALGA).Please refer to the 16 plus regular Updates herewith for news, history, happenings and progress...For the full description and updates please visit www.gofundme.com/gay-tas-history

Jubilant For Me 2010Australia Day 2010 Jan 2009 - PresentHobart2010 in particular, Australia Day was jubilant for me. Firstly, noting the great presentation by the Choir Of Hard Knocks* with Jonathon Welch conducting, at the Australian Of The Year Awards. Secondly, the Mercury’s “Reading A Lot Into Our History” coverage of David Tredinnick’s performance at Twamley Farm in Buckland. Thirdly, a pleasant BBQ with a group of FriendZ at the Waterworks. All this endorsed in me a greater confidence of the joy I get in choir, performance, theatre, film, arts, community. Back in 2006 Jonathon Welch came to Sydney Street Choir to invite us to the Melbourne Town Hall for participation in a first launch of the Choir Of Hard Knocks*. A little later I was involved in formation and launch of the Choir Of High Hopes Hobart to which Jonathon Welch was invited at the Theatre Royal. Both choirs are now celebrating their tenth year. *Footnotes:Jason Stephens convinced Jonathon Welch - who had started a similar choir in Sydney (the "Sydney Street Choir" in 2001[3] - to establish a choir of homeless people for an ABC television project.Recruiting was by word of mouth and through community organisations. As at May 2007, it had about 50 members. The name is a reference to the School of Hard Knocks, i.e. learning by experiencing life, not through classrooms.

Trial By JuryGilbert And Sullivan Society Of Tasmania Jan 2016 - Jan 2017Old Hobart PenitentiaryIn the many operas he created with composer Arthur Sullivan, librettist WS Gilbert lampooned the social and political authorities of his day as comically ignorant, idle, absurd, and worse. Today Gilbert’s satiric sharpness is sadly underrated, because a century of affectionate but bland ‘traditional’ productions have rendered it toothless, and because of our own less-than-respectful relationship with authority. If the content is tarnished, the art still sparkles. Sullivan’s tuneful music spans tender to mischievous to pompous, and Gilbert’s wordsmithing is incomparably inventive, witty and surprising. This new production of “Trial By Jury” highlights these with clear, smart delivery of the text and a strong, enjoyable musicality (even if the whole cast flirts with disaster in the “Nice Dilemma” ensemble.) The Chorus is particularly pleasurable, creating a rich, disciplined, joyous noise. The principals are uniformly good, and range from cheeky seasoned Savoyard Peter Middleton to splendidly voiced newcomer Grace Burdick. Ian Williams, who could drown the entire cast with his powerful voice, shows restraint as the Judge, playing with lightness and fun. The acting is for the most part unremarkable: not great, but not intrusive either. At about forty minutes, “Trial” is easy on the newcomer, whilst this fairly traditional rendering will please established fans. I smiled and smiled. - Robert JarmanThat professional production gave emphasis to clarity, actor movement and expression. The audience had new seating arrangements to really get to see and be involved in the action. This paid off with capacity bookings. It was my third year in this production at the Penitentiary. In January 2017 G&S moved to the Supreme Court in Salamanca Place for it's TBJ annual live production each Friday and Saturday. Death Or LibertyRoar Films, Hobart And Tile Films, Ireland Oct 2015 - Jan 2016Tasmania And IrelandDEATH OR LIBERTYA stirring lyrical journey into the heroic lives of the Empire's rebels exiled to Australia - the prison without walls. They were martyrs to the cause in their homelands but their convict lives are an amazing untold story - until now.---The Director used shots of Robert Thompson as an onlooker in several court scenes, also as a miner and rebel. Seen in the court top right and several locations throughout proceedings in last 10 minute production of the Cinema and ABC versions. Also in garden scenes (at Runnymede) standing and walking; and as a miner, rebel and onlooker in the main video plus international and Irish versions.. ---This is the first narrative history that brings together the stories of the political prisoners sent as convicts to Australia from all over Britain and parts of her Empire, spanning the early days of the penal settlement at Sydney Cove until transportation ended in 1868. Author Tony Moore asks who were these prisoners, and what led them to take the radical actions they did? Why did the authorities so fear these dissenters and rebels, and was transportation effective in halting dissent?---Most crucially, what influence did these political activists in exile have on colonial life and politics, from the Castle Hill Rebellion to trade unionism and the early appearance of responsible and democratic government. In our contemporary climate, where laws are being tightened to curtail dissent in the interests of national security, Death or Liberty seeks to raise questions about the violence of both the state and its opponents, the causes of zeal, ruthlessness and idealism, and to reveal the crucial place of hope, courage and conviction in human progress.

New Zealand TourBiggest Little Town Choir Nov 2015 - Dec 2015Nelson, Marlborough & Tasman, New ZealandMy December gig with dear friends from Byron Bay was to reunite OZ & NZ after some 175 million years was a simple but exciting challenge. We toured from Wellington around the south island to Christchurch. Sang with local choirs all along the way. Recorded our songs in the Ballroom Cave, trecked mountains, trails and exchanged songs, love, caring, kindness, consideration. I recognised meeting the nicest people in my lifetime."One upon a time there was a supercontinent called *Pangea." If you look closely on our poster map you will see people living at the top of NZ’s South Island and Bundjalung Country (Byron Bay) were once neighbours. We meet once more! *Pangaea or Pangea (/pænˈdʒiːə/[1]) was a supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras.[2][3] It assembled from earlier continental units approximately 300 million years ago, and it began to break apart about 175 million years ago.[4]In contrast to the present Earth and its distribution of continental mass, much of Pangaea was in the southern hemisphere and surrounded by a super ocean, Panthalassa. Pangaea was the lastsupercontinent to have existed and the first to be reconstructed by geologists.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHJSMIh-Qzshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlqqk-N9hI0https://www.mullummusicfestival.com/THE_BIGGEST_LITTLE_TOWN_CHOIR/367http://www.stuff.co.nz/marlborough-express/news/74189722/marlborough-bats-to-be-serenaded-by-australian-choirwww.forestandbird.org.nz/what-we-do/projects/bat-recovery-project http://www.wellingtoncommunitychoir.org.nz/http://itson.co.nz/2015/11857-never-tear-us-apart-tour

ActorGenerations Ensemble 2010 - 2014Glenorchy TasmaniaTogether with the Glenorchy City Council, the Tasmanian Theatre Company ran workshops in Glenorchy with a group of local people all aged 50+. This group of about 15 people brought a wealth of knowledge and experiences, to work together with highly talented theatre artists, in an exchange that is culturally rich and productive. Generations Ensemble Theatre (GET) grew out of a project opportunity within the 2009 Ten Days on the Island Festival in Hobart’s northern suburbs. The project participants were very engaged by that experience and had a strong desire to set up a permanent ongoing intergenerational theatre ensemble, accessible to a broad range of older people in the local community. They successfully applied to the Australia Council to support ongoing skills development workshops for the latter part of 2009 and early 2010. Those workshops were very well supported by older people in the local community, with participation growing from the original 12 to 18 active participants.Through that process they established a partnership with the Tasmanian Theatre Company and various community performances have been presented in conjunction with the Glenorchy City Council. We hoped to continue these presentations in the future, incorporating 'invisible' and public spaces, festivals and events. GET was funded by the Tasmanian Government’s Community Capacity Building Fund in 2011, to create a new work in conjunction with a local high school called Time Travellers, that aims to break down some of the age barriers in the community …and to have a lot of fun!In 2014 we worked with professional tutorship of Fiona Stewart, who introduced excellent voice, breath and movement techniques. Fiona strongly encouraged feedback from our individual lives to write a public performance suitable for a new Moonah Arts Centre and touring. -
