Profile bio

About Robert Tymann Ed.D.

I have worked in an urban alternative school and both large and small suburban districts. My role has evolved from teacher to assistant principal, principal, and then assistant superintendent. Combined with my doctoral work at Hofstra University and owning my own business for fifteen years, I can provide unique insights into the challenges facing schools today.I have spent a significant portion of my life as a consumer and provider of professional development. I pride myself on creating learning experiences for staff that seek to improve student outcomes, modeling the desired changes during the professional development experience. I have researched and implemented strategies for systemic change throughout my career. Complex Adaptive Systems Theory has provided a vocabulary for my thinking, and I see unit planning as the leverage point for moving the system in the desired direction. Project Based Learning represents the highest standard for unit design. For this type of innovation to succeed the system must be aligned in purpose and process; this requires systemic change to support innovation from all organization levels. I have successfully enlisted the support of the Board of Education, parents, administrators, teachers, and union leaders in support of this type of initiative as both a building and a district leader. Through the development and adoption of a unique District Mission Statement, I have aligned the hiring process, instructional supervision process, professional growth initiatives, and new teacher development to support the unit design initiative at East Hampton Schools. The unprecedented challenges facing educators today require the development of units of study capable of being delivered either online, face-to-face, or in hybrid schedules. Through discussions with teachers, parents, students, and administrators from several districts, I found consensus on project-based learning, providing meaningful learning experiences for students regardless of the infrastructure. Understanding the essential components of instruction that work, regardless of the infrastructure, will set a foundation for an agile district culture capable of adapting to a fluid instructional setting. I have the experience and knowledge to coach a district through this process.
