I have spent my entire Shell career of 25 years in technology and field instrumentation engineering functions for oil refineries and Upstream. I have worked at refineries as well as in central technical support organizations. In the role of instrumentation specialist I participated in a lot of troubleshooting teams at oil refineries at process as well as in oil movement, in which I quite frequently reduced deemed hardware problems such as damaged column trays, into improperly calibrated instruments or troubled impulse lines. My most valued deliveries derive from good communication with process engineers. The area of level/interface controllers (both in process as well as in oil movement area) had my interest and I have been the initiator of development work in Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) radar level instruments. I coordinated research and development activities with vendors such as Enraf-Nonius, Saab, Honeywell, Rosemount aimed at the use of intelligence and technology to meet specific oil industry requirements.The success of radar measurement and other developments such as special seals for pressure measurements, led to my involvement with vendor development activities in new instruments after my Shell retirement.
