Within Pfizer's Materials Science Group, I lead particle size characterization in support of API development from early-stage (pre-POC) through commercial launch, and support drug product development for late-stage small molecules. Our laboratory supports API teams across many technical platforms including: particle size analysis through laser diffraction, dynamic image analysis for the assessment of particle morphology and size, atomic force microscopy to assess the physicochemical surface properties of pharmaceutical materials, and electron microscopy for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and drug product characterization. Within this context, I work with partner business functions to deliver both validated GMP methods for commercial launch, and non-GMP methods for specialized team needs (e.g., process development activities, and API solid form development) . In the latter case, I aim to foster both internal collaboration to deliver what our characterization techniques provide, and develop relationships with external academics and experts to develop novel characterization platforms in support of API development.

My doctoral studies at Rutgers included an Integrative Graduate Educations and Research Traineeship (IGERT) in nanotechnology for clean energy, which was a fellowship sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and coordinated between Princeton University and Rutgers University. This program allowed IGERT students from both universities to collaborate both in the classroom and research. My doctoral research focused on using plasmonic nanoparticles for more efficient light harvesting mechanisms in organic solar cells, and encompassed my developing expertise in metallic nanoparticle synthesis, surface functionalization of nanoparticles with organic molecules, as well as nanoscale characterization methods. Among the characterization techniques employed were electron microscopy (scanning and transmission) and related spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, as well as techniques to measure solar cell performance. Distilling the breadth of experience I gained in graduate school, I achieved a great deal of knowledge in how to effectively research, develop, and implement technology platforms. Additionally, the success of this research was due to our collaborators at the Air Force Research Laboratory, which gave me a wonderful experience in how effective teams work together to achieve impactful results.
