About Robert Walsh

I am passionate about informing & mentoring aquatic managers, engineers, scientists & leaders of the importance of the aquatic microfauna within inland waters. A personal goal is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge & practice, particularly in aquatic ecology, & to empower the community through teaching & dissemination of knowledge.Experienced Aquatic Scientist: demonstrated history of working in the environmental services industry (wetlands, lakes, dams, reservoirs, temporary & markedly astatic waters, etc) across Australia; in the taxonomic identification of aquatic microfauna (zooplankton) & macro-invertebrates from around the country.Skilled in Environmental Issues, Limnology, Water Quality, Biodiversity, and Wetlands. Strong research background with a PhD (University of Tasmania), focused in Limnology of Freshwater Coastal Dune Lakes, wetlands etc, & Sub-alpine Lakes with particular reference to the distribution & ecology of aquatic microfauna. Design, conduct & manage both aquatic biological & limnological investigation into the ecology , water quality & water quantity within storm water impoundments, reservoirs, wetlands of all types, lakes, streams & rivers, plus temporary waters throughout Australia.Provide aquatic ecological and water quality assessment plus specialist advice to government agencies, instrumentalities & commercial enterprises. These have included but are not restricted to sites in Queensland: such as the Surat Basin, Condamine Basin, Bowen Basin, Galilee Basin. Monitoring of waterways/wetlands in New South Wales (Office of Water, Uni of Western Sydney): Water filled open cut mine pit lakes, mining reservoirs & reclaimed wetlands in WA, NSW and QLD: In South Australia: Wetlands & River Murray wetlands, coastal wetlands (the Coorong, Lake Bonney), salt water interceptions schemes, waste water treatment plants (e.g. Bolivar, Millicent, Naracoorte, Heathfield) for AWQC, SAWater. In Victoria: monitoring of drinking water reservoirs (Arthur Rylah Institute); waste water treatment plants -e.g. Werribee Waste Water Treatment Plant (Melbourne Water); wetlands & impoundments of the Hattah Lakes (EPA Victoria); lakes/wetlands of the Western Lakes District (EPA Victoria), the River Murray & associated wetlands (MDFRC): Sub-alpine lakes in TAS - Woods Lake, Lagoon of Islands, Great Lake (HEC, Entura, TAS Uni ). TAS coastal marine zooplankton faunal assemblages - (Division of Sea Fisheries, CSIRO). Southern Ocean: - algal samples along Antarctic coastline & Southern Ocean (CSIRO Marine Sciences).

The business offers laboratory services to clients identifying animal life from water samples presented to the laboratory from across Australia.Australian Waterlife has a fully equipped and resourced laboratory, specifically equipped to deal with the identification of aquatic microfauna (Rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera and Ostracoda) and aquatic macro-invertebrates within samples presented to the laboratory from across Australia. Please see the web address for greater detail. www.australianwaterlife.com.auThe Laboratory offers services which include:•Taxonomic identification of aquatic microfauna (zooplankton) to lowest practical taxonomic level (Genus/Species).•Taxonomic identification of aquatic macro-invertebrate to lowest practical taxonomic level.•Determination of relative abundance of aquatic microfaunal organisms.•Biomonitoring of aquatic micro-invertebrate and macro-invertebrate fauna.•Impact assessment comparing pre- and post development of inland waters.
