  • Upland Road, Llc
    Principal
Upland Road, Llc Jun 2020 - Present
UPLAND ROAD, LLC was founded to bring clear guidance and innovative perspective to businesses, regulatory systems, and markets at a time when human society, its institutions, and the ecological health of the planet, are changing profoundly. The principals of Upland Road have over two centuries of collective experience in shaping strategies to respond to the most daunting organizational and environmental challenges of our time on every continent and in every sector of industry. They have addressed complex, interrelated problems in areas ranging from transforming the built environment toward sustainability; to creating metrics for sustainable supply chains; to directing impact capital in global markets; to developing infrastructure resilience strategies that adapt to the challenges of climate change. They are committed to finding solutions that improve both outcomes and prospects for everyone involved.Upland Road members have training and practice in business, law, engineering and data analytics. Our approach is driven by three connected principles: Interdisciplinary methods both reinforce and expand the solutions available to clients; experience informs innovation, making theoretical objectives achievable, not merely aspirational; respect for the past that builds on what works, while discarding outmoded thinking, allows bold solutions to emerge and prosper.Upland Road is typically not engaged by clients who simply want to get by, defend incumbencies or preserve the status quo. Our clients have sought our guidance in transforming markets, surviving existential threats and re-imagining industry sectors by creating frameworks and language necessary to solve their most pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges. We work best with clients who ask, simultaneously, “How?” and, “Why not?”

There is no “Away” on earth. Everything we discard ends up in the water, energy or material cycle. Encompassing the entirety of the manufacturing sector, as well as end-of-life impacts, the lifecycle of materials management represents approximately 35 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, the vast majority of waste production, and a host of other environmental effluents. Interest in sustainable materials management for MSW is growing. But despite the existence of standards and certifications for products and companies, there is no unified protocol governing the performance and definition of sustainable materials management for municipalities and the waste management industry. SWEEP—the Solid Waste Environmental Excellence Protocol—is designed to address this gap.

On behalf of Cameron-Cole LLC, I was the PI for the SPREP tender for a “Regional Assessment of Sustainable Tourism in the Pacific.” For this project, I conceived an integrated ‘market transformation’ approach to the specifications of the tender, built the interdisciplinary team and authored the successful proposal. Organized month-long 5-country itinerary and meetings with nearly 100 stakeholders and evaluated a range of accommodations and tourism activities for sustainability opportunities. Principal author of 200+ pages of deliverables assessing the current tourism industry and outlining a market transformation plan for the regional tourism sector to sustainability, including country-specific recommendations for the 5 countries visited: Palau, Tonga, French Polynesia, New Caledonia & Vanuatu. Developed specific Market Transformation recommendations include the structure of a strategic tourism market transformation plan; the passage of enabling legislation; the undertaking of technical demonstration projects; the development of mandatory regulations and voluntary best-practice programs; the scale-up to pilot-level demonstration projects; the full-scale launch of regulations and voluntary programs and the institution of a program of continuous improvement. Conducted business meetings in English and French. As a result of this work, I was invited presenter 2020 Climate Strong Islands Dialogue, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
