My role as LIS in Windsor Terrace has not changed a lot from a similar position at Clarendon. The scope of my work within the BPL system has changed though. My work in Windsor Terrace is more community based: this work includes outreach with community organizations and businesses to offer Bookmobile and satellite storytime programs to expand library services to the Windsor Terrace community.

I work as part of the Regional team to provide cultural, educational, and technological services to the East Flatbush community. I collaborate with the Library Circulation Supervisor (LCS), Neighborhood Library Supervisor (NLS), and branch staff to identify community needs and develop services and programs accordingly. I oversee branch operations, participate in outreach activities to connect with community organizations and work with a team of talented librarians to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for our patrons.

This was my first library job upon receiving my Library Science degree from Pratt. My job was to get to know the Bed-Sty community I served and program accordingly. I spent a lot of time at the reference desk getting to know the patrons and came to understand the ways the library could serve their needs.Highlights of the job included creating an Annual Block Party with local businesses and cultural organizations; establishing a branch Resume & Career Help program; encouraging local visual artists and art galleries to display their work in the Dionne Mack-Harvin African American Heritage Center; visiting local day care centers for storytelling events; and collaborating with a neighborhood charter school to create an Oral History project with their middle school students.

Teach 8 – 14 student Moth-style Storytelling classes based on a curriculum developed by Adam Wade. We spend six weeks pitching, developing, streamlining and performing true stories from their lives. My job is to help them explore their stories and find the framework to fully illustrate the significance of their experiences. My job is also to stay out of their way when they have a good thing going. We also perform enough to gain a level of comfort in sharing their experiences with other people.

I was hired as a Reserves Assistant at the Barnard College Library, where helped the College professor procure Reserve items for their classes. After two years I was promoted to Access Services Supervisor. As Supervisor, I managed the circulation and reserve desk, providing a wide range of customer service, including general reference, media, and technology support. I was responsible for hiring and training staff, developing the environmental sciences collection and coordinating the transfer of de-accessioned materials to Better World Books and other outside partners. I also served as the Disability Services Liaison for the Library and was a member of the Library’s Communication Committee where I worked with colleagues on a range of programs and strategies to promote library services and resources throughout campus.
