I was a Helicopter Rescue Swimmer in the Coast Guard for 21 years. I retired as the Chief of the shop in Kodiak, AK. I am grateful I had the opportunity to help hundreds of people on their worst days. As I progressed in that field I had exposure to technical work (maintaining survival equipment), I graduated to quality assurance for survival equipment, then I became a mid-level supervisor. I stepped into my first main leadership role in 2011 where I ran a shop where we operated all throughout the state of Alaska, including with helicopters on the back of Coast Guard ships. That exposed me to the importance of logistics and management when there are so many moving pieces to manage. I learned team building, leadership, creating a vision and earning buy in, all aspects of team management to include work scheduling, maintaining a $450,000 budget, leader development, project management, employee reviews, as well as the importance of morale within a team.
