I am transitioning out of the military after a rewarding 27-year career. I served over twenty years as a special operations officer and led a wide range of challenging missions, ranging from humanitarian demining in Central America, to intense combat operations in Afghanistan, to critical counterterrorism efforts in Africa’s Lake Chad basin. Additionally, my experiences in unique nominative positions, like the Pentagon’s Joint Staff, as the Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Army, and culminating as Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council, have sharpened my capacity to excel as a leader at the executive level of organizations, and broadened the network of experts and influential people I can draw upon to address complex issues. I always seek to add value to any organization I am a part of, to constantly learn and improve, and to be regarded as an honest and fair person. I’ve also worked hard to make the most of my life outside of work as I possibly could. To that end, I’ve had over 150 articles published on a wide range of subjects. I also co-founded a small farm, and brew my own beer, wine, and cider at every opportunity. My family and the time I spend with them are extremely important to me.

Director for Counterterrorism on the National Security Council, at the White House. Responsible for coordinating all United States counterterrorism policies in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, coordinated U.S. efforts to combat the proliferation of man-portable air defense systems. Planned and organized Principals Committee and Deputies Committee meetings chaired by the National Security advisor and Deputy National Security Security advisors, respectively, and Counterterrorism Security Group Meetings chaired by the Special Assistant to the President for Counterterrorism. Planed and led interagency meetings as a leader of a sub-Counterterrorism Security Group. Prepared written correspondence and assessments for two Presidents of the United States and their principal advisors. Supported the transition between the Obama and Trump administrations as a member of the National Security Council Staff.

Commander of a 2,400 member Army Special Forces Group, responsible for conducing full spectrum special operations in Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iraq, and Africa. During my tenure as Group Commander I deployed to combat and led the Group as the commander of Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan. I also deployed with the Group as it serves as the nucleus of Special Operations Command (Forward) - North and West Africa which I also commanded. In Africa, I oversaw all special operations in North and West Africa designed to address the Islamic State, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and Boko Haram terrorist organizations.

In this assignment, I served as the principal Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Army in the areas of current and future operational requirements, personnel policies, and readiness issues. I was responsible for conveying the Secretary of the Army's priorities and intentions to the Army Staff and Secretariat. My duties included the research, analysis and coordination of policies and programs to assist the Secretary in carrying out his responsibilities. On behalf of the Secretary, I also served as one of his key liaisons to the Department of Defense, The Joint Staff, and governmental and non-governmental organizations. I prepared the Secretary for meetings, official travel, public appearances and associated functions. I also accompanied the Secretary on official travel and represented him in various meetings. Finally, I provided advice and assistance on all matters submitted to the Secretary for action.

As SOTF East, we conducted Village Stability Operations, trained Afghan Local Police, and partnered with the 1st, 2nd, and 6th Afghan Commando Kandaks (Battalion), advising them during combat operations. Our exploits were detailed in the book "100 Victories" by Linda Robinson.

I served as an Action Officer in J37, the Deputy Directorate for Special Operations. Later, I played a key role in establishing the Joint Staff's Pakistan Afghanistan Coordination Cell, which served as the Pentagon's hub for all activities relating to the war in Afghanistan. During my time there, I helped link military professionals, interagency partners, think tank and academic personnel, and the media into a community of interest to foster greater understanding of the war and determine the optimal strategy for success.
