This involves performing routine growth and maintenance of materials for experimentation (e.g. microbial cell lines), management of laboratory equipment, consumable stock control, and Health & Safety/COSHH assessments. I support student laboratory-based work by training undergraduate & postgraduate students on equipment use, as well as laboratory safety and best practices. I also work directly with Principal Investigators (PIs) to support & advise on their projects, reporting back any issues and all study data generated from the experiments that I support. More recently, I have had the opportunity to support some offsite work with Moredun Research Institute – analysing communal high-traffic area samples from farms for the presence of Johne’s Disease. In my role as a Quality Control Analyst within RoslinCT’s analytical quality control department, my main focus was the performance of flow cytometry on stem cell samples to monitor the effects of the modification process performed by the production team. I also headed up a project team focused on establishing and implementing mGMP testing procedures for a pre-clinical medical product, ahead of stage 2 clinical trials. I am currently working as a Lead Analyst in the Biologics division at Charles River Laboratories, which operates under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations. The role centres around the analysis of genetically-modified cell banks, both yeast and bacterial cell banks, for the production of recombinant protein products. I am trained in aseptic techniques and my day-to-day duties involve the undertaking of purity assessments, phenotype confirmation, bacteriophage contamination assays and… Show more I am currently working as a Lead Analyst in the Biologics division at Charles River Laboratories, which operates under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations. The role centres around the analysis of genetically-modified cell banks, both yeast and bacterial cell banks, for the production of recombinant protein products. I am trained in aseptic techniques and my day-to-day duties involve the undertaking of purity assessments, phenotype confirmation, bacteriophage contamination assays and viability establishment. I also perform DNA extraction and PCR amplification on a regular basis, and analysis of the products by gel electrophoresis and spectrophotometry. Additionally, I perform quality control checking of data generated by my colleagues, as well as report QC checking prior to release of Reports of Analysis to Sponsors. I am also trained in the procedures for the safe handling of radiochemicals, and the examination of gene inserts via hybridisation of a radiolabelled probe. Biologics will shortly be moving to a new site in Riccarton, so I am currently involved in writing transfer protocols and performing validation work for all our current experimental methods. Show less
